National Soccer League
The National Soccer League (NSL) was the top-level soccer league in Australia, run by Soccer Australia and later the Australian Soccer Association. The NSL, the A-League's predecessor, spanned 28 seasons from its inception in 1977 until its demise in 2004, when it was succeeded by the A-League competition run by Football Federation Australia, the successor to the Australian Soccer Association. During the history of the NSL the league was contested by a total of 42 teams; 41 based in Australia and one based in New Zealand. Seasons initially ran during the winter seasons, until 1989 when this was changed to the summer season. In 1984, the league was split into two conferences (Northern and Southern) to introduce more teams into the competition; the league returned to a single division in 1987. Wollongong Wolves FC
Wollongong Wolves Football Club is an Australian semi-professional association football club based in Wollongong, in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. The club currently competes in the National Premier Leagues NSW, the second-tier of football in Australia. The club plays its home games at WIN Stadium. The club has been successful throughout their history winning one continental championship, two NSL championships, three state championships and a National Premier Leagues title (2019) The club was formed in 1980 and competed in the National Soccer League from 1981 until the competition ceased in 2004, with the exception of a brief stint in the NSW State League in 1987. Michael Petkovic
Michael Petkovic (born 16 July 1976) is an Australian former goalkeeper. Club career Petkovic is of Croatian origin and is the brother of former Perth Glory goalkeeper Jason Petkovic. South Melbourne Petkovic started off his career with South Melbourne in the NSL as a 19-year-old. As the second choice to youth product Dean Anastasiadis, Petkovic was relegated to cup games for game time. Petkovic however took advantage of his limited opportunities and produced numerous man of the match performances in South Melbourne's successful NSL Cup run in the 1995/96 Season. Following this season, Petkovic would reclaim the number 1 spot and establish himself as one of Australia's finest goalkeepers as he earned half of his Socceroos caps during his time at South Melbourne. Olympic Park Stadium (Melbourne)
Olympic Park Stadium was a multi-purpose outdoor stadium located on Olympic Boulevard in inner Melbourne. The stadium was built as an athletics training venue for the 1956 Olympics, a short distance from the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), which served as the Olympic Stadium. Over the years it was the home of rugby league side, Melbourne Storm and the A-League team, Melbourne Victory; throughout its life the stadium played host to athletics. Olympic Park Stadium was located in Olympic Park, which is part of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct. Olympic Park Stadium was demolished in 2012, and replaced with an Australian rules football ground. Constantinos "Con" Boutsianis (born 27 December 1971 in Melbourne) is an Australian football (soccer) player and former international, noted for his ability in dead ball situations. Career South Melbourne FC After impressive performances for the South Melbourne youth side, Ferenc Puskas placed faith in the young winger and called him up to the senior side. Boutsianis began his senior career with South Melbourne in the National Soccer League in 1989, and soon established himself as a goalscoring midfielder. Giannis "Johnny" Anastasiadis (Greek: Γιάννης "Τζόνι" Αναστασιάδης; born 13 August 1968 in Melbourne, Australia) is a former Australian soccer player who spent the majority of his career playing for Greek club PAOK FC. He is currently the senior assistant coach at A-League side Western United. Club career Anastasiadis began his career at Heidelberg United before being signed by the Greek club PAOK Thessaloniki FC at the age of 19.
