World Judo Championships
The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year (except the years when the Olympics take place) by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team competitions have also been held since 1994. The men's championships began in 1956, though the format and periodicity of the championships have changed over time. The last edition of the championships took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2022. History The first edition of the world championships took place in Tokyo, Japan in 1956. There were no weight classes at the time and Japanese judoka Shokichi Natsui became the first world champion in history, defeating fellow countryman Yoshihiko Yoshimatsu in the final. Jeon Ki-Young
Jeon Ki-young (전기영, born 11 July 1973 in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do) is a retired judoka who competed in the -78 kg and -86 kg divisions. Jeon has won three consecutive world championships (1993, 1995 & 1997), twice beating the Hidehiko Yoshida in dramatic fashion in the finals. He has also won six world cup titles. The crowning moment in Jeon's judo career came in winning the gold medal in the men's middleweight division at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, U.S. He defeated Armen Bagdasarov of Uzbekistan in the final match by ippon. In his march to the gold, Jeon won every match by ippon, except the 1st round match against the Dutch judoka Mark Huizinga, who would go on to dominate the weight once Jeon himself retired. Jeon retired from competition at a relatively young age of 25 in 1999, citing both knee injuries and an absence of motivation due to lack of competition. Shinichi Shinohara
is a retired Japanese judo and winner of the gold medal at the 1999 World Judo Championships in Birmingham. To Shinohara's disappointment, French champion David Douillet did not compete at Birmingham due to back injury; Shinohara was quoted as saying, "Even though I lifted the double crown at the worlds, it won't mean anything as long as people say it was won in Douillet's absence." Douillet had previously been declared victor at the 1997 championships in Paris after a French judge gave Shinohara a controversial penalty. Three years after, Shinohara received the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics when he was defeated by Douillet due to another disputed judgment about Uchi Mata Sukashi in the finals which was strongly protested by the Japanese participants. David Douillet
David Donald Hubert Roger Douillet (; born 17 February 1969) is a French politician and retired judoka. Douillet was born in the city of Rouen. Standing at and weighing , he won the judo heavyweight gold medals in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and Sydney. He also gained four world titles and a European crown. These achievements make him one of the most decorated judoka in history. The size of David Douillet (1 m 96 and more than 120 kg in his period of competition) classified him in the heavyweight division. is a retired Japanese judoka, and former world champion. His younger brothers, Yukimasa and Kenzo are also former world champions. Nakamura is from Fukuoka, Fukuoka. He began Judo at the age of 3rd grader. After graduation from Tokai University, He belonged to Asahi Kasei. He won the gold medal in the -86 kg weight class at the 1993 World Judo Championships. In 1995, after All-Japan Championships, he moved up in weight class, from -86 kg to -95 kg. Among his best sporting achievements are his gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Paweł Marcin Nastula (born 26 June 1970) is a Polish judoka and mixed martial artist. He was the 1995 and 1997 Judo World Champion, and 1996 gold medallist at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, winning those titles in the U95kg weight category. Early career Nastula was born in Warsaw, and started training Judo at the age of 10 at AZS AWF. Judo In addition to the 1996 Summer Olympics, Nastula won many European and World competitions, and was considered one of the top judo players in the world. Between February 1994 and March 1998 Nastula was unbeaten in Judo, having 312 consecutive wins over a period of those 1,220 days and winning every competition, a monumental feat.
