1997 World Championships In Athletics – Men's Triple Jump
These are the official results of the Men's triple jump event at the 1997 IAAF World Championships in Athens, Greece. There were a total number of 40 participating athletes, with two qualifying groups and the final held on Friday 1997-08-08. With the previous two major championships resulting in 18 metre jumps, expectations were high. All medalists from those championships made it into the finals. In addition to world record holder Jonathan Edwards and Olympic champion Kenny Harrison, there were three more athletes who had jumped beyond 17.70m Edwards was the first to get over 17m in the first round with a 17.33m. Near the end of the round, Yoelbi Quesada took the lead with a 17.60m and his Cuban teammate Aliecer Urrutia followed up with a 17.23m. Triple Jump
The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to the long jump. As a group, the two events are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. The triple jump was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympics event since the Games' inception in 1896. According to World Athletics rules, "the hop shall be made so that an athlete lands first on the same foot as that from which he has taken off; in the step he shall land on the other foot, from which, subsequently, the jump is performed." Tibor Ordina (17 March 1971 – 12 April 2016) was a Hungarian athlete who specialized in the long jump and triple jump. Born in Budapest, Ordina stood at tall, and during his active career he weighed . Long jump In the long jump he finished eleventh at the 1994 European Indoor Championships. He also competed at the 1993 World Indoor Championships, the 1993 World Championships and the 1994 European Championships without reaching the final. He was Hungarian long jump champion in 1993, 1995, 1996 and 1998, rivalling János Uzsoki, and was indoor champion in 1993, 1994, 1997 and 1999. Robert Howard (athlete)
Robert Howard (November 26, 1975 in Brooklyn, New York – August 14, 2004 in Little Rock, Arkansas) was an American world-class triple and long jumper and a nine-time NCAA collegiate champion. High school Howard graduated from Shea High School in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 1994. His top triple jump while competing in the high school ranks was 51-5.75 (15.69m). He received the Tom Doherty Memorial Award as the state's male athlete of the year. Collegiate career In choosing a college, Howard elected to follow in the lengthy horizontal jumping tradition at the University of Arkansas, where he would follow in the footsteps of such luminary jumpers as Mike Conley, Sr., Edrick Floreal, Jérôme Romain, Brian Wellman and Erick Walder. Raúl Chapado
Raúl Chapado (born 4 May 1970 in Ávila, Spain, Ávila) is a retired male triple jumper from Spain. His personal best was 16.83 metres, achieved in August 1997 in Rovereto.
