1997 World Championships In Athletics – Men's Decathlon
These are the official results of the Men's Decathlon competition at the 1997 World Championships in Athens, Greece. There were a total number of 34 participating athletes, including fourteen non-finishers. The competition started on August 5, 1997, and ended on August 6, 1997. At over 41%, this edition of the men's decathlon is notable for having the highest fraction of athletes not finishing the competition in the World Championships history. This was equalled 20 years later during the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. Decathlon
The decathlon is a combined event in Athletics (sport), athletics consisting of ten track and field events. The word "decathlon" was formed, in analogy to the word "pentathlon", from Greek language, Greek δέκα (''déka'', meaning "ten") and ἄθλος (''áthlos'', or ἄθλον, ''áthlon'', meaning "contest" or “prize”). Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all. Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved. The decathlon is contested mainly by male athletes, while female athletes typically compete in the heptathlon. Traditionally, the title of "World's Greatest Athlete" has been given to the person who wins the decathlon. Steve Fritz
Steve Fritz (born November 1, 1967 in Salina, Kansas) is an American retired decathlete. Fritz played basketball and competed in track and field for Kansas State University. He was an All-American and Big 12 champion decathlete in 1989 and 1990. Fritz set the Kansas State school record for points in the decathlon. Fritz represented the United States on 10 national teams for decathlon, including a first-place finish at the 1991 Summer Universiade in Sheffield, England and a fourth-place finish at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Fritz was named to the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 and enshrined to the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame on October 4, 2020. Fritz was an assistant coach for the Kansas State track and field team for 21 years, and is currently the assistant basketball coach at Wamego High School. Roman Šebrle
Roman Šebrle (; born 26 November 1974) is a retired decathlete from the Czech Republic. He is considered to be one of the best decathlon athletes of all time. Originally a high jumper, he later switched to the combined events and is a former world record holder in the decathlon. In 2001 in Götzis he became the first decathlete ever to achieve over 9,000 points, setting the record at 9,026 points, succeeding his compatriot, Tomáš Dvořák, who had scored 8,994 points two years earlier. After placing second in the decathlon during the 2000 Summer Olympics, Šebrle won the gold medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Tradition dictates the winner of the decathlon holds the title of "World's Greatest Athlete". Michael Cameron "Mike" Smith (born September 16, 1967) is a Canadians, Canadian decathlete from Kenora, Ontario. Biography He attended Pinecrest Elementary School, Lakewood Intermediate School, Beaver Brae Secondary School in Kenora, Ontario, and then Central Technical School in Toronto for his final year of high school. Smith attended the University of Toronto Commerce program during his athletic career. He was coached by Andy Higgins while living in Toronto, Toronto, Ontario and then by Les Gramantik when he moved to live and train in Calgary, Alberta in 1994. Erki Nool
Erki Nool (born 25 June 1970, in Võru, Estonia) is an Estonian decathlete and former politician. Life and career Nool grew up in an impoverished environment in the southern part of Võru. His father was a worker in a furniture factory and his mother was in charge of the finances of a school. There were six children, with Erki the third youngest. When he was 13, from the suggestion of his father he moved to a sports-focused boarding school. There he could eat a warm meal three times a day for free. In those days the economy was in a poor condition. When traveling to competitions they didn't even get their own cabin in the cruise ship but instead just slept in the hallways and then competed and trained the next day. They also didn't even have winter athletics training facilities. Nool was brought to tears when he was gifted a new, pristine pair of sneakers.
