1997 US Open – Women's Doubles
Lindsay Davenport and Jana Novotná defeated the defending champions Gigi Fernández and Natasha Zvereva in the final, 6–3, 6–4 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 1997 US Open. It was the 17th doubles title and second major title for Davenport, and the 67th title and ninth major title for Novotná. This was the first major in which sisters Venus and Serena Williams competed, losing in the first round. Lindsay Ann Davenport Leach (born June 8, 1976) is an American former professional tennis player. Davenport was ranked singles world No. 1 for a total of 98 weeks, and was the year-end singles world No. 1 four times (1998, 2001, 2004, and 2005). She also held the doubles world No. 1 ranking for 32 weeks. Noted for her powerful and consistent groundstrokes, Davenport won a total of 55 WTA Tour singles titles, including three major titles (one each at the Australian Open, the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open), the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and the Tour Finals. "Conchita" Martínez Bernat (born 16 April 1972) is a Spanish former professional tennis player. Kristie Boogert (born 16 December 1973) is a former professional female tennis player from the Netherlands who retired in 2003 due to chronic elbow pain. On 5 February 1996 she reached her career-high singles ranking of number 29. She has not won any singles titles, but did win three titles in doubles. Kimberly Po (born October 20, 1971) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. In her career, she won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 2000, partnering Donald Johnson. Sabine Appelmans (born 22 April 1972) is a former professional tennis player from Belgium. She was Belgium's Fed Cup captain from 2007 until 2011. Career Appelmans started playing at the neighbour's court at the age of seven. Her first trainer, Fred Debruyn, saw immediately that she was very talented.
