1997 TFL Statewide League Season
The 1997 TFL Statewide League premiership season was an Australian rules football competition, staged across Tasmania, Australia over twenty roster rounds and six finals series matches between 12 April and 20 September 1997. This was the twelfth season of statewide football and the League was known as the Cascade-Boags Draught Super League under a dual commercial naming-rights sponsorship agreement with both Cascade Brewery in Hobart and Boag's Brewery in Launceston. At the conclusion of this season four clubs left the competition owing to severe financial problems. Burnie Dockers Football Club
Burnie Dockers Football Club is an Australian rules football club in Burnie, Tasmania, Australia. The club currently competes in the North West Football League (NWFL). Club history The Burnie Dockers were formed as a result of a merger between former TFL Statewide League club Burnie Hawks (formerly known as Cooee) and NTFL club the Burnie Tigers. After several years of bitter hatred in the city between the two rival clubs, both clubs were struggling both on-field and financially by the early 1990s. In late 1993 the Burnie Hawks absorbed the Burnie Tigers and merged, however the club still played as the Burnie Hawks until, with the arrival of former North Melbourne champion Peter German, the club adopted a new emblem, colours and jumper designed to appease both sides of the divide. Boag's Brewery (J. Boag & Son) is an Australian brewery company founded in 1883 by James Boag and his son, also named James, in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. It is now owned by Lion, a Trans-Tasman subsidiary company of Japanese beverage conglomerate, Kirin. All of the company's beers are produced in Launceston. West Australian Football League
The West Australian Football League (WAFL) is an Australian rules football league based in Perth, Western Australia. The league currently consists of ten teams, which play each other in a 20-round season usually lasting from March to September, with the top five teams playing off in a finals series, culminating in a Grand Final. The league also runs reserves, colts (under-19) and women's competitions. The WAFL was founded in 1885 as the West Australian Football Association (WAFA), and has undergone a variety of name changes since then, re-adopting its current name in 2001. Danny Noonan (Australian Footballer)
Danny Noonan (born 29 November 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Bears in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the early 1990s. He also spent time in Tasmania with Tasmanian Football League (TFL) club Clarence and was an interstate representative for Tasmania. Football career Noonan, from Mooroolbark, was a reserves footballer at Carlton as a youngster but he left without making a senior appearance. He joined Clarence, playing his first TFL season in 1988 and winning their Best and Fairest award in 1990. Brisbane recruited Noonan to the AFL with a pre-draft selection in 1990. North Hobart Oval
North Hobart Oval is a Stadium, sports venue in North Hobart, Tasmania, used for Australian rules football. History North Hobart Oval started its existence as Hobart Town's brickfields in 1844 before becoming a Brickfields Hiring Depot, convict women's housing site, an immigration depot and an invalid persons' depot before closing in 1882 whereby the land became a rubbish dump until it was acquired for construction of a football stadium in 1921. The first official match to take place on North Hobart Oval was a Tasmanian Football League, TFL match between Lefroy Football Club, Lefroy and Glenorchy Football Club, New Town on 6 May 1922, the match was won by Lefroy (9.8.62 to 7.13.55) before 1,000-people. Peter Curran (footballer)
Peter Curran (born 15 July 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn and the Brisbane Bears in the VFL/AFL. A courageous strong-marking forward, Curran played an important part in the most successful era in Hawthorn's history, the 1980s. After a disappointing loss in the 1984 Grand Final, Curran found greater success in 1985, playing in the upset 9 point win over Essendon in the Foster's Cup night Grand Final and in the come-from-behind reserves Grand Final victory against Carlton. He was a member of their premiership sides in 1986 and 1989. In the 1989 Grand Final he contributed 3 goals. Troy Clarke (Australian Rules Footballer)
Troy Clarke (8 June 1969 – 28 October 2013) was an Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Bears in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. He is a member of the Queensland Football Hall of Fame. John McCarthy (Australian Rules Footballer, Born 1967)
John Frederick George McCarthy (born 30 March 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne Football Club, North Melbourne and Fitzroy Lions, Fitzroy in the Australian Football League, VFL/AFL. Originally from Wales, McCarthy is one of the most successful Australian rules football players to have been born overseas. Between 1989 and 1993 he represented Tasmania regularly at Interstate matches in Australian rules football, interstate football. Rod Grinter
Rodney 'Balls' Grinter (born 26 May 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the VFL and AFL. Grinter is most remembered for an incident in Round 2 of the 1988 VFL season when he punched Footscray defender Terry Wallace in the face, rendering Wallace unconscious. Both field umpires failed to report Grinter for the incident, but he received a six-week suspension for the incident after a VFL investigation. Later that season he appeared in Melbourne's losing Grand Final side against Hawthorn. He was also suspended for nine matches in 1990 following a number of incidents in a game against Richmond at the MCG. Michael Lockman
Michael Lockman (born 29 August 1963) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond, Collingwood and the Sydney Swans in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally from Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) club East Malvern, Lockman had two separate stints at Richmond. After playing three games for Richmond early in 1986, he was traded to Collingwood where he finished the season. He made the move north to Sydney in 1988 and appeared in the opening 11 rounds of the season but didn't feature in the second half of the year. Paul Hamilton (Australian Footballer)
Paul Hamilton (born 19 June 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Australian Football League (AFL) during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Hamilton was a defender and usually occupied a back pocket for Essendon. After playing in a Preliminary Final in 1989, Hamilton participated in the 1990 AFL Grand Final. He brought up his 100th league game in Essendon's 1991 encounter against Carlton Football Club at Waverley Park.
