The 1997 Ontario municipal elections were led in all municipalities across the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Ontario on November 10, 1997, to elect mayors and reeves, councillors, and school trustees. There were also referendum questions in some municipalities. The most closely watched contest was in the newly amalgamated city of Toronto, where Mel Lastman narrowly defeated Barbara Hall (politician), Barbara Hall to win the mayoralty. Chris Friel (politician)
Chris Friel (born February 26, 1967) is a politician in the Canadian province of Ontario. He was the mayor of Brantford from 1994 to 2003 and was re-elected to the same position in the 2010 municipal election. He was defeated in the 2018 municipal election by Kevin Davis. Early life and private career Friel was born and raised in Brantford. He has an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Waterloo (1989). Before running for office, he was the executive director of a non-profit government agency. Both of his parents were active in politics. His father, James Friel, was involved in the labour movement and ran for a trustee position on the Brant County Board of Education in 1976. Gloucester ( ) is a former municipality and now geographic area of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Located east of Ottawa's inner core, it was an independent city until amalgamated with the Regional Municipality of Ottawa–Carleton in 2001 to become the new city of Ottawa. Clarington (2021 population 101,427) is a lower-tier municipality in the Regional Municipality of Durham in Ontario, Canada. It was incorporated in 1973 as the town of Newcastle with the merging of the town of Bowmanville, the Village of Newcastle and the townships of Clarke and Darlington, and was established on January 1 1974. In 1993, the town was renamed Clarington, a portmanteau of the names of the two former townships. Bowmanville is the largest community in the municipality and is the home of the municipal offices. Clarington is part of the Oshawa census metropolitan area in the eastern end of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Bill Erickson (politician)
Bertil William Erickson (June 8, 1928 – September 21, 1987) was an NCAA All-American basketball player at the University of Illinois during a career that spanned from 1947 to 1950, and then a player in the National Professional Basketball League for the Saint Paul Lights. High school A native of Rockford, Illinois, Erickson attended Rockford East High School from 1942–43 to 1945–46. He was a guard who led the team to the final 16 of the Illinois High School Association state basketball tournament as a junior, and then a fourth-place finish in Illinois as a senior. In his final year, Erickson was named First Team All-State by the ''Champaign News Gazette'' and Second Team All-State by the ''Chicago Daily News''. Jane Brewer
Jane Brewer (1924-2017) was a Canadian politician and a former mayor of the city of Cambridge, Ontario. Brewer was born April 15, 1924, to Jack and Clara Davison. Her political career began in 1978 when she was elected a ward alderman. She went on to serve as the mayor of Cambridge from 1988 to 2000. Her political career spanned 36 years during which time she also served as a Region of Waterloo councillor. In addition to political endeavors Brewer was an active member of the Lutheran Church, serving as the director of the Canadian section of the Lutheran Church of America and as vice-president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada's Eastern Synod. Brewer retired in 2014 due to health issues. The same year she was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce. Brewer died August 22, 2017.
