1997 NCAA Division II Football Season
The 1997 NCAA Division II football season, part of college football in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association at the Division II level, began on September 6, 1997, and concluded with the NCAA Division II Football Championship on December 13, 1997, at Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence, Alabama, hosted by the University of North Alabama. Northern Colorado defeated New Haven in the championship game, 51–0, to win their second Division II national title. The Harlon Hill Trophy was awarded to Irvin Sigler, running back from Bloomsburg. 1997 Northern Colorado Bears Football Team
The 1997 Northern Colorado Bears football team was an American football team that won the 1997 NCAA Division II national championship. The team represented the University of Northern Colorado in the North Central Conference (NCC) during the 1997 NCAA Division II football season. In their ninth season under head coach Joe Glenn, the Bears compiled a 13–2 record (8–1 against conference opponents), outscored opponents by a total of 489 to 249, and won the NCC championship. The team advanced to the playoffs and won the national championship by defeating in the championship game. The team played its home games at Nottingham Field in Greeley, Colorado. 1997 UC Davis Aggies Football Team
The 1997 UC Davis football team represented the University of California, Davis as an independent during the 1997 NCAA Division II football season. Led by fifth-year head coach Bob Biggs, UC Davis compiled an overall record of 9–5. 1997 was the 28th consecutive winning season for the Aggies. UC Davis was ranked No. 14 in the NCAA Division II poll at the end of the regular season and advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championship playoffs. They upset fourth-ranked in Kingsville, Texas in the first round for the second straight season. In the quarterfinals, the Aggies upset sixth-ranked in San Angelo, Texas before falling in the semifinals to second-ranked in West Haven, Connecticut. The team outscored its opponents 378 to 325 for the season. The Aggies played home games at Toomey Field in Davis, California.
