1997 French Open – Men's Singles
Gustavo Kuerten defeated Sergi Bruguera in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1997 French Open. He became the first unseeded player since Mats Wilander in 1982 and the second-lowest ranked player ever to win a major, and the first Brazilian male singles player to win a major. Following the win, Kuerten improved in the rankings from world No. 66 to No. 15. Yevgeny Kafelnikov was the defending champion, but lost to Kuerten in the quarterfinals. Gustavo Kuerten
Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten (; born 10 September 1976) is a Brazilian former world No. 1 tennis player. He won the French Open singles title three times ( 1997, 2000, and 2001), and was the Tennis Masters Cup champion in 2000. During his career he won 20 singles and 8 doubles titles. Kuerten suffered many problems with injuries which resulted in his non-attendances at many tournaments in 2002 and between 2004 and 2008. Alberto Berasategui Salazar (born 28 June 1973) is a former top-10 professional tennis player from Spain. He was a Grand Slam finalist at the 1994 French Open, and won a total of 14 ATP singles titles, achieving a career-high singles ranking of world no. 7 in November 1994. Hicham Arazi ( ar, هشام أرازي; born 19 October 1973) is a former male tennis player from Morocco. He played professionally from 1993 to the end of 2007. Galo Blanco (; born 8 October 1976) is a retired professional tennis player from Oviedo, Spain. After many years as a professional tennis coach Blanco joined the Davis Cup steering committee in 2018. Tennis career Most of Blanco's early professional tour appearances were earned by qualifying for tournaments. Magnus Norman (born 30 May 1976) is a Swedish tennis coach and retired professional tennis player. He reached a career-high Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world No. 2 singles ranking on June 12, 2000. Filip Dewulf (born 15 March 1972) is a former professional male tennis player from Belgium. In his career, he won two ATP Tour singles titles and one title in doubles. In 1997 he reached the semifinals of the French Open, his best singles result ever and the first Belgian tennis player (male or female) to reach the semi-final at a Grand Slam tournament.
