The 1996–1997 Úrvalsdeild kvenna was the 40th season of the top-tier women's basketball league in Iceland. The season started on 5 October 1996 and ended on 27 March 1997. The 1995–1996 Úrvalsdeild kvenna was the 39th season of the top-tier women's basketball league in Iceland. The season started on 6 October 1995 and ended on 13 March 1996. Birna Valgarðsdóttir
Birna Ingibjörg Valgardsdóttir (born 19 January 1976) is an Icelandic former basketball player who won eight Icelandic championships, in a record twelve trips to the national finals, and five Icelandic Cups. She was named the Icelandic Female Basketball Player of the Year in 2002 and 2004. Birna was the second player to break the 5000 points barrier in Úrvalsdeild kvenna and is its all-time leading scorer. In December 2014, she broke the Úrvalsdeild kvenna all-time record for games played and held that record until March 2023, when it was broken by Sigrún Sjöfn Ámundadóttir. After difficult injuries during the later part of her career, Birna retired following the 2014-2015 season. Anna María Sveinsdóttir
Anna María Sveinsdóttir (born 22 November 1969) is an Icelandic former basketball player and coach. She won twelve Icelandic championships and eleven Icelandic basketball cups, and is regarded as one of the best women's players in Icelandic basketball history. She was the first player to break the 5000 points barrier in Úrvalsdeild kvenna and finished her career as its all-time leading scorer with 5001 points in 324 games. The scoring record stood until 23 April 2013, when it was broken by Birna Valgarðsdóttir. In 2001 she was voted the Icelandic female basketball player of the century and as one of the twelve players on the team of the 20th century. Alda Leif Jónsdóttir
Alda Leif Jónsdóttir (born 18 April 1979) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She has won the Icelandic championship four times and the Dutch championship once. Alda was a seven-time selection for the Úrvalsdeild Domestic All-First Team and was named the Úrvalsdeild Domestic Player of the Year in 2002. Club career During the 1999–2000 season, Alda led the Úrvalsdeild in assists, blocks, steals, shooting percent and free throw percent. She spent the following season with Holbæk in the Dameligaen, averaging 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3,5 steals per game. In 2005, Alda signed with BV Den Helder (women) of the Dutch Women's Basketball League (WBL). She was named to the 2006 Dutch All-Star game and helped Den Helder to the Dutch championship. In the sport of basketball, there are five players play per team, each assigned to positions. Historically, these players have been assigned, to positions defined by the role they play on the court, from a strategic point of view.
