The 1996–97 Xavier Musketeers men's basketball team represented Xavier University from Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1996–97 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, 1996–97 season. Led by head coach Skip Prosser, the Musketeers finished 23–6 (13–3 A-10) in the regular season, but lost in the quarterfinal round of the 1997 Atlantic 10 men's basketball tournament, Atlantic 10 tournament. In the 1997 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, NCAA tournament, the Musketeers defeated 1996–97 Vanderbilt Commodores men's basketball team, Vanderbilt in the first round before losing to No. 2 seed 1996–97 UCLA Bruins men's basketball team, UCLA, 96–83, in the round of 32. Skip Prosser
George Edward "Skip" Prosser (November 3, 1950 – July 26, 2007) was an American college basketball coach who was head men's basketball coach at Wake Forest University at the time of his death. He was the only coach in NCAA history to take three separate schools to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, NCAA tournament in his first year coaching the teams. In 21 years as a collegiate coach, he made 18 postseason appearances. Previously, he coached Xavier University for seven seasons, where he achieved great success. He spent his first year of coaching at the collegiate level at Loyola University Maryland, Loyola College in Maryland, where he took the Greyhounds to the team's first modern-day NCAA Tournament appearance. Prosser was the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Coach of the Year, Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2003.
