1996–97 EHF Women's Champions League
The 1996–97 EHF Women's Champions League was the fourth edition of the modern era of the 1961-founded competition for European national champions women's team handball, handball clubs, running from 10 October 1996 to 10 May 1997. The competition system was reformed, as the group stage was expanded from 8 to 16 teams, now replacing the Round of 16, and the quarter-finals and semifinals were reestablished. BM Sagunto, Mar Valencia defeated Viborg HK in the final to become the first Spain, Spanish team to win the competition. 1995–96 EHF Women's Champions League, Defending champion Podravka Koprivnica was defeated by the Denmark, Danish in the quarter-finals.Results

EHF Women's Champions League
The Women's EHF Champions League is the competition for the top women's handball clubs in Europe, organised annually by the European Handball Federation (EHF). It is the most prestigious tournament for clubs, with the champions of Europe's top national leagues participating. Tournament structure Each year, the EHF publishes a ranking list of its member federations. The first 27 nations are allowed to participate in the tournament with their national champion. The national federations are allowed to request extra places or upgrades from the EHF Cup. The EHF Champions League is divided into five stages. Depending on the ranking of their national federation and of the criteria list, teams can enter the competition in either qualification or the group phase.
