1996–97 Athletic Bilbao Season
The 1996–97 season was the 96th season in Athletic Bilbao's history and their 66th consecutive season in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football. Season summary Athletic had been without a permanent head coach since replacing Dragoslav Stepanović with caretaker manager José María Amorrortu in March 1996. They filled the vacancy ahead of the new season by appointing Spanish-born Frenchman Luis Fernández, previously manager of Paris Saint-Germain in his adopted homeland. Fernández's appointment led to an immediate improvement in league form, and Bilbao finished the La Liga season in 6th place. This was their best league finish since 1993–94, and also meant a return to the UEFA Cup in 1997–98. Their performance in the Copa del Rey, however, left room for improvement. Athletic Club ( eu, Bilboko Athletic Kluba; es, Athletic Club de Bilbao), commonly known as Athletic Bilbao or just Athletic, is a professional Association football, football club based in the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country (autonomous community), Basque Country of Spain. They are known as ''Los Leones'' (The Lions) because their stadium was built near a church called ''San Mamés'', which was named after Saint Mammes of Caesarea, Saint Mammes, an early Christian thrown to the lions by the Roman Empire, Romans. Aitor Larrazábal
Aitor Larrazábal Bilbao (born 21 June 1971) is a Spanish former professional footballer who played solely for Athletic Bilbao, currently manager of Gernika Club. A left-back of attacking penchant, he appeared in 445 competitive matches for his only club and was also a penalty kick specialist, scoring at least one La Liga goal in 13 of his 14 seasons. Playing career Larrazábal was born in Bilbao, Biscay. Having joined Athletic Bilbao's youth ranks at 11, he started playing professionally with its reserves in the Segunda División, and made his first-team debut on 2 September 1990 in a 1–0 away loss against CD Tenerife, finishing his first year in La Liga with 18 games. Julen Guerrero
Julen Guerrero López (born 7 January 1974) is a Spanish former professional footballer who played solely for Athletic Bilbao as an attacking midfielder. He is the current manager of the Spain national under-17 team. He appeared in 430 official games for his only club, scoring 116 goals and helping them to finish second in La Liga in the 1997–98 season. Jon Andoni Goikoetxea Lasa (born 21 October 1965), often known as Goiko, is a Spanish retired footballer. An attacking player of wide range, he operated in various positions on the right side of the pitch (right-back, midfielder or forward), and was best known for his Barcelona spell, during the club's ''Dream Team'' years. Josu Urrutia Tellería (born 10 April 1968) is a Spanish former Association football, footballer who played as a Midfielder#Defensive midfielder, defensive midfielder. The team captain of an association football team, sometimes known as the skipper, is a team member chosen to be the on-pitch leader of the team; they are often one of the older or more experienced members of the squad, or a player that can heavily influence a game or has good leadership qualities. Genar Andrinúa Cortabarría (born 9 May 1964) is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a central defender. Club career Andrinúa was born in Bilbao, Biscay. During his career, he played solely for Athletic Bilbao safe for a loan at Real Valladolid, and he made his debut for the former's first team in the 1983–84 season, appearing once for the La Liga champions. Eventually, Andrinúa gained the captain's armband from veteran Andoni Goikoetxea, also a centre-back, and proceeded to play 356 competitive games for the Basque club, also scoring at least once in all the seasons but one. Aitor Karanka de la Hoz (Basque and ; born 18 September 1973) is a Spanish football manager and former player who was most recently the head coach of Segunda División club Granada. Save for a brief spell in the United States at age 32, Karanka played solely in Spain for Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid, appearing in 275 La Liga matches over 13 seasons and winning six honours with the latter. Karanka started his managerial career in the late 2000s, working as assistant manager at Real Madrid during José Mourinho's tenure as manager from 2010 to 2013.
