1996 Newfoundland General Election
The 1996 Newfoundland general election was held on February 22, 1996 to elect members of the 43rd Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, General Assembly of Newfoundland. It was won by the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, Liberal Party under new leader Brian Tobin. PC Leader Lynn Verge was not re-elected in her riding of Humber East. Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Thus, the government chose to sit near the heat, and leave the opposition sitting in the cold. Beaton Tulk
Beaton Tulk (May 22, 1944 – May 23, 2019) was a Canadian educator, civil servant and politician. He served as the seventh premier of Newfoundland from 2000 to 2001 as a member of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. Early life Born in Ladle Cove, Newfoundland, Tulk was the youngest son of Sadie and Japhet Tulk. He graduated from Memorial University with BA, B.Ed, and Master of Educational Administration degrees. He also later obtained a Canadian Securities Investment Diploma. An educator prior to politics, he was a supervising principal for the Carmanville school system from 1974 to 1979. Judy Foote
Judy May Foote ( Crowley; born June 23, 1952) is a Canadian former politician, 14th and current lieutenant governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. She is the first woman to hold the position. Prior to her appointment as viceregal representative of the King in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, Foote was the Liberal Member of Parliament for the ridings of Bonavista—Burin—Trinity (2015–2017) and Random—Burin—St. George's (2008–2015). Oliver Langdon
Oliver Langdon is an educator and former political figure in Newfoundland and Labrador. He represented Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1989 to 2007 as a Progressive Conservative and then Liberal member. He was born in Seal Cove, Fortune Bay and educated at Memorial University. Langdon married Margaret Loveless. Loyola Sullivan
Loyola Sullivan (born April 3, 1949) served as Canada's Ambassador for Fisheries Conservation from 2007 until 2011 and is a former Member of the House of Assembly in Newfoundland and Labrador. Roger D. Grimes (born May 2, 1950) is a Canadian politician from Newfoundland and Labrador. Grimes was born and raised in the central Newfoundland town of Grand Falls-Windsor. Bob French (politician)
Robert French (January 24, 1944 – August 2, 2002) was a businessperson and politician in Newfoundland and Labrador. He represented Conception Bay South in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1996 to 2002. He was born in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. He married Elizabeth "Bettey" Bussey. James P. Walsh (born 1949) is a businessperson and former politician in Newfoundland and Labrador. He represented Conception Bay East – Bell Island in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1989 to 2003. He was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. Jack Byrne (June 2, 1951 – June 4, 2008) was a Canadian politician. He represented the riding of Cape St. Francis in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He was a member of the Progressive Conservatives.
