1996 French Polynesian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in French Polynesia in May 1996 for the Territorial Assembly. The result was a victory for Tahoera'a Huiraatira, which won 22 of 41 seats. The pro independence Tāvini Huiraʻatira more than doubled its representation, from 4 to 10 seats, Aia Api won five, and Here Ai'a one. The remaining three seats were taken by independents Boris Léontieff (affiliated to the Fetia Api party), Tinomana Ebb, and Lucien Kimitete. Following the election Gaston Flosse was re-elected as President of French Polynesia. 1991 French Polynesian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in French Polynesia on 17 March 1991 for the Territorial Assembly. Gaston Flosse's Tahoera'a Huiraatira won 18 of 41 seats, and Alexandre Léontieff's Polynesian Union coalition won 14. The Aia Api party won five, and Tāvini Huiraʻatira four. Following the election Flosse formed a coalition with Émile Vernaudon's Aia Api and was elected President of French Polynesia. The coalition lasted only six months. In September 1991, Flosse fired two Aia Api ministers, and instead formed a coalition with Jean Juventin. Aia Api
The Aia Api ( en, New Land) is a political party in French Polynesia. At the last legislative elections on May 23, 2004, and by-elections on February 13, 2005, the party was part of the Union for the Democracy (''Union pour la Démocratie''), that won 27 out of 57 seats. The party was deregistered in January 2015. Milou Ebb
Tinomana Milou Ebb (27 October 1934 — 13 March 2009) was a French Polynesian politician and Cabinet Minister who served as president of the Assembly of French Polynesia from 1995 to 1996 and Mayor of Teva I Uta from 1977 to 2001. He was a member of Here Ai'a. He was the father of politician Valentina Cross. Ebb was born in Papeetee and grew up in the Leeward Islands before moving to Mataiea to become a farmer. He became involved in business, and was chair of the Marama Nui electricity company. As chair, he commissioned the first hydroelectric power station in Papeari in 1981. He unsuccessfully contested the 1972 French Polynesian legislative election as a candidate for Here Ai'a. He was elected as mayor of Teva I Uta in March 1977, and later that year was elected to the Assembly of French Polynesia in the 1977 election as a United Front candidate. Fetia Api
The Fetia Api or Nouvelle Étoile ( en, New Star) was a centre-right political party in French Polynesia from 1996 to 2016, advocating for the autonomy of French Polynesia. The party was led by Boris Léontieff, former mayor of Arue since 1989, and then subsequently led by Philip Schyle after 2002. The party was once one of the oldest in French Polynesia, spanning over 20 years. Originally the party was first associated with the french Union for French Democracy (UDF) party, but in 2007 it was part of dissidents who split away from the UDF and created the New Centre (NC). Philip Schyle was elected the Foreign Minister for the NC, and Fetia Api helped with public financial contributions. In 2016, the party was dissolved, with the members becoming part of the newly formed Tapura Huiraatira (TAPURA) party. Here Ai’a ( en, Love of the Land), also known as Te Pupu Here Ai'a Te Nunaa ia Ora ( en, Patriotic Group for an Autonomous Polity), is a pro-independence political party in French Polynesia. It was founded by John Teariki and Henri Bouvier in 1965 following the banning of the pro-independence Democratic Rally of the Tahitian People (RDPT) by the colonial French government. Supported mainly by rural Polynesians, the party was a significant force in French Polynesian politics from its foundation until the early 1980's, before entering a decline following Teariki's death in 1983. The party is currently led by Gustave Taputu. The party was founded on 9 February 1965. Tāvini Huiraʻatira (), also known as Tāvini huiraʻatira nō te ao māʻohi – FLP (), is a pro-independence political party in French Polynesia. Founded in 1977 as the ''Front de libération de la Polynésie'' (FLP), the party has been led since its inception by Oscar Temaru. From 2004 to 2013 it was part of the Union for Democracy (UPLD) coalition. The Tavini has primarily been an opposition party, but between 2004 and 2013 governed French Polynesia at various times as part of various coalition arrangements. History The party was founded in 1977 by Oscar Temaru under the name the Front for the Liberation of Polynesia (FLP). 2001 French Polynesian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in French Polynesia on 6 May 2001 for the Territorial Assembly. The result was a victory for Tahoera'a Huiraatira, which won 28 of 49 seats. The pro independence Tāvini Huiraʻatira won 13 seats, and Fetia Api 7. A single independent, Chantal Flores (associated with the Tapura Amui no Tuhaa Pae party), was elected in the Austral Islands. The Aia Api party failed to reach the 5% threshold and was eliminated from the Assembly. Following the election Gaston Flosse was re-elected as President of French Polynesia.
