The 1996 Davis Cup World Group qualifying round was held from 20 to 22 September. They were the main play-offs of the 1996 Davis Cup. The winners of the playoffs advanced to the 1997 Davis Cup World Group, and the losers were relegated to their respective Zonal Regions I. 1996 Davis Cup
The 1996 Davis Cup (also known as the 1996 Davis Cup by NEC for sponsorship purposes) was the 85th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 124 teams entered the competition, 16 in the World Group, 26 in the Americas Zone, 29 in the Asia/Oceania Zone, and 53 in the Europe/Africa Zone. Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Panama made their first appearances in the tournament. France defeated the Sweden in the final at the Massan Hall in Malmö. Hernán Gumy
Hernán Gumy (born 5 March 1972) is a former tennis player from Argentina, who turned professional in 1991. He represented his native country at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was defeated in the first round by Venezuela's Nicolas Pereira. Gumy made two finals in his career; both of them ATP 250s on clay in 1996. He won Santiago, Chile (his final tournament of 1996) by beating the Spanish World No. 15 Félix Mantilla in a tough three-setter: in the semi-finals, and the Chilean world number 11 Marcelo Ríos in the final 6–4, 7–5. He lost the other final he was in, in Oporto, Portugal to Spain's Félix Mantilla despite winning the first set. Fernando Meligeni
Fernando Ariel Meligeni (born April 12, 1971), nicknamed ''Fininho'' (diminutive form in Portuguese for ''thin''), is a Brazilian former professional tennis player. He won 3 singles titles and reached the semi-finals of both the 1999 French Open and the 1996 Summer Olympics. He was well known because of his capacity of fighting at the court, taking matches to the limit (tiebreaks and five sets). His favorite surface was clay. Goran Orešić
Goran Orešić (born 28 April 1975) is a former professional tennis player from Croatia. Biography Orešić played in two Davis Cup ties for the Croatian team, both in 1996. He debuted in the reverse singles of a tie against Ukraine, with his win over Sergei Yaroshenko securing a 5–0 scoreline. His other appearance came in the World Group qualifier against Australia in Split, where he was beaten by Mark Philippoussis. On the ATP Tour he twice featured in the singles main draw of the Croatia Open Umag, as a qualifier in 1995 and 1996. As a doubles player he made the quarter-finals of the Zagreb Indoors in 1996 and 1997. He is a former coach of Croatian player Ivo Karlović, who was his childhood friend and former doubles partner. Mark Woodforde
Mark Raymond Woodforde, OAM (born 23 September 1965) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. He is best known as one half of "The Woodies", a doubles partnership with Todd Woodbridge. Woodforde was born in Adelaide, and joined the men's professional tennis ATP Tour in 1984. Woodforde won four singles titles, including his hometown Adelaide tournament twice. His best singles result in a Grand Slam was reaching the semi-final of the Australian Open in 1996, his 38th Grand Slam singles tournament, which remains a record for the longest time taken to reach a maiden semi-final. Patrick Michael Rafter (born 28 December 1972) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. He reached the top Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles ranking on 26 July 1999. Goran Ivanišević (; born 13 September 1971) is a Croatian former professional tennis player and current coach. Mark Anthony Philippoussis ( ; born 7 November 1976) is an Australian former professional tennis player of Greek and Italian descent. Philippoussis' greatest achievements are winning two Davis Cup titles with Australia in 1999 and 2003, winning the deciding rubber in the final of each. Saša Hiršzon (born 14 July 1972) is a former professional tennis player from Croatia and current tennis coach. His highest world rankings were No. 214 in singles on 20 December 1993, and No. 85 in doubles on 28 July 1997. Early life Hiršzon was born in Varaždin.
