5000 Metres
The 5000 metres or 5000-metre run is a common long-distance running event in track and field, approximately equivalent to or . It is one of the track events in the Olympic Games and the World Championships in Athletics, run over laps of a standard track. The same distance in road running is called a 5K run; referring to the distance in metres rather than kilometres serves to disambiguate the two events. The 5000 m has been present on the Olympic programme since 1912 for men and since 1996 for women. Prior to 1996, women had competed in an Olympic 3000 metres race since 1984. The 5000 m has been held at each of the World Championships in Athletics in men's competition and since 1995 in women's. Mark Carroll (athlete)
Mark Carroll (born 15 January 1972 in Knocknaheeny, Cork) is a former Irish runner that went to school in The North Monastery, who specialized in the 5000 metres. He was the 1991 European junior champion over 5,000m; 2000 European Indoor champion over 3,000m and won a bronze medal in the 1998 European Championships over 5,000m. Carroll missed the 1996 Olympics due to injury and missed qualifying for the 5,000m final at the 2000 Olympics by one place. He finished 6th in the 2002 New York Marathon, but decided not to look to compete over that distance in the 2004 Olympics due to the heat and humidity in Athens. He has also been coaching other Irish athletes such as Gareth Turnbull since about 2005 and in 2008 was appointed US Athlete Manager for Athletics Ireland. James Calvin Spivey (born March 7, 1960 in Schiller Park, Illinois) is a former American middle-distance runner and Olympian. Spivey took up competitive running in Illinois where he became one of the best high school runners from his state. He was the 1982 NCAA DI men's 1500-meter champion with Indiana University. Spivey enjoyed a long Olympic career, in which he participated in the Olympic Summer Games in 1984, 1992, and 1996. Bahadur Prasad Singh (born 1 September 1965) is a former Indian middle distance runner. He holds the current national records in 5000 metres. Singh set the 5000 m record (13:29.70) in Birmingham, UK on 27 June 1992. Then on 23 December 1995, Prasad clocked a time of 3:38.00 at the 1995 South Asian Games in Chennai to set the 1500 m national record, which stood for 23 years. Simon Chemoiywo (born 20 April 1968) is a Kenyan former long-distance runner. He competed in track, cross country and road running. At the IAAF World Cross Country Championships he twice represented Kenya: in 1994 he was the runner-up and team champion, then helped retain the team title for Kenya at the 1995 race. He was the African champion in the 5000 metres in 1993 in a championship record and was a silver medallist at the same event three years later.
