Hurdling
Hurdling is the act of jumping over an obstacle at a high speed or in a sprint. In the early 19th century, hurdlers ran at and jumped over each hurdle (sometimes known as 'burgles'), landing on both feet and checking their forward motion. Today, the dominant step patterns are the 3-step for high hurdles, 7-step for low hurdles, and 15-step for intermediate hurdles. Hurdling is a highly specialized form of obstacle racing, and is part of the sport of athletics. In hurdling events, barriers known as hurdles are set at precisely measured heights and distances. Antti Ensio Haapakoski (born February 6, 1971 in Kalajoki) is a retired Finnish hurdler. He won the gold medal at the 1990 World Junior Championships, finished fifth at the 1992 European Indoor Championships, sixth at the European Championships and sixth at the 1995 World Indoor Championships. Timothy Kroeker (born 25 May 1971 in Chilliwack) is a retired Canadian who specialised in the 110 metres hurdles. He represented his country at the 1996 Summer Olympics, as well two outdoor and three indoor World Championships. Niklas Urban Eriksson (born February 17, 1969) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player, continuing as an ice hockey coach. He won a gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Eriksson played most of his years in Leksands IF, and has also represented IFK Helsingfors (Finland) and HC Pustertal Wölfe (Italy). Florian Schwarthoff (born May 7, 1968 in Dortmund) is a former German hurdler best known for winning a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Schwarthoff had his best season in 1995 when set a new German record of 13.05 sec. in Bremen. He was expected to compete for a silver or bronze medal at the World Championships in Gothenburg behind the overwhelming favourite Allen Johnson from the United States.
