1995 Wellington Local Elections
The 1995 Wellington local elections were part of the 1995 New Zealand local elections, to elect members to sub-national councils and boards. The Wellington elections cover one regional council (the Greater Wellington Regional Council), eight territorial authority (city and district) councils, three district health boards, and various local boards and licensing trusts. The polling was conducted using the standard first-past-the-post electoral method. Wellington City Council The Wellington City Council consists of a mayor and eighteen councillors elected from five wards (Northern, Western, Tawa, Eastern, Southern). Ruth Gotlieb
Ruth Gotlieb (née Wolman, 16 May 1923 – 23 July 2019) was a local politician in Wellington, New Zealand, serving as a Wellington City Councillor from 1983 to 2001. Biography Early life and career Gotlieb was born in England on 16 May 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Reka Wolman. The family moved to Cork, Ireland, when her father was appointed a rabbi there. When she was a teenager she and her family moved again, to Brisbane, Australia, as her father had been appointed chief rabbi for the city. During World War II, Gotlieb joined the Signal Corps and became a Morse operator. In the 1940s, she moved to Wellington and started a pretzel business with her husband, Gerry Gotlieb, whom she married in 1951. The couple went on to have four children. Andy Foster (politician)
Andrew John Whitfield Foster (born 21 December 1961) is a New Zealand politician who served as Mayor of Wellington from 2019 to 2022. Foster served on the Wellington City Council for nine terms from 1992 until 2019. The Wellington Citizens' Association, was a right-leaning local body electoral ticket in Wellington, New Zealand. It was formed in 1911 by merging the selection process of council candidates of several civic interest groups and business lobby groups. Its main ambitions were to continue to control the Wellington City Council, reduce local spending and deny left-leaning Labour Party candidates being elected. Kerry Prendergast
Dame Kerry Leigh Prendergast (née Ferrier, born 28 March 1953) is a New Zealand politician who served as the 33rd Mayor of Wellington between 2001 and 2010, succeeding Mark Blumsky. She was the second woman to hold the position, after Fran Wilde. Roland Sapsford
Roland Sapsford is a former male co-convenor (organisational president) of the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand. The female co-convenor in the latter part of his office was Georgina Morrison. Sapsford was elected co-convenor in a contested election at the Green Party AGM in 2006, at the same time as former male co-leader Russel Norman's election. Susan Margaret Piper (born 1951) is a retired New Zealand trade unionist and local politician. Biography Piper was born in Wellington in 1951. Her parents were Leon Bremmer "Pip" Piper and Margaret Neilson "Tilly" Hunter, both were trade unionists and active members of the Communist Party of New Zealand (CPNZ). Christopher Wilton Parkin (born 1948) is a New Zealand businessman, art collector and philanthropist.
