1995 Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1995 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 2–5 at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock, Arkansas. Top-seeded defeated hosts in the championship game, 82–79, to win their second Sun Belt men's basketball tournament. It was WKU's second Sun Belt title in three years. The Hilltoppers, in turn, received an automatic bid to the 1995 NCAA tournament. No other Sun Belt members were invited to the tournament. Format No teams left or joined the Sun Belt before the season, leaving conference membership fixed at ten teams. With all teams participating in the tournament this year, the field increased from nine to ten teams. With all teams seeded based on regular-season conference records, the top six teams were all placed directly into the quarterfinal round while the four lowest-seeded teams were placed into the preliminary first round. Matt Kilcullen
Matt Kilcullen (born October 31, 1954) is an American Director of Athletics at Mercy College (New York), Mercy College, formerly college basketball coach and athletics administrator at the University of North Florida. He served as head coach of men's basketball at four schools, Castleton State College (1979–1982), Jacksonville University (1991–1994), Western Kentucky University (1994–1998), and the University of North Florida (1999–2009), and was assistant coach at several others. He was the first coach of the North Florida Ospreys men's basketball, North Florida Ospreys in their transition to Division I (NCAA), Division I. In April 2009 he was relieved of his position by the university's new athletic director, Lee Moon, and subsequently took an administrative position in the school's athletics department. Chris Sean Robinson (born April 2, 1974) is a retired American professional basketball player. He had a short National Basketball Association (NBA) career. After graduating from Southwest Magnet High School in Macon, Georgia, Robinson attended Western Kentucky University where he averaged 13.8 points per game over four seasons. He was selected by the Vancouver Grizzlies with the 51st overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft. As a rookie for the Grizzlies, Robinson appeared in 41 games of the 1996–97 NBA season (six as a starter), averaging 4.6 points per game. The winner of the tournament is guaranteed an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. History Format The size and format of the Sun Belt tournament has varied widely since its establishment in 1976. The size of the conference has ranged between a minimum of six teams and as many as thirteen. Nonetheless, the tournament has consistently utilized a simple single-elimination style tournament. 1995 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1995 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 16, 1995, and ended with the championship game on April 3 at the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington. A total of 63 games were played. The Final Four consisted of UCLA, making their fifteenth appearance and first since the 1980 team that eventually saw their appearance vacated, Oklahoma State, making their fifth appearance and first since 1951, North Carolina, making their twelfth appearance and second in three years, and Arkansas, the defending national champions. 1994–95 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Basketball Team
The 1994–95 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers men's basketball team represented Western Kentucky University during the 1994–95 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Hilltoppers were led by Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Matt Kilcullen and SBC Player of the Year Chris Robinson. The team won the Conference Championship and the Sun Belt Basketball Tournament, earning a bid to the 1995 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament for the third straight year. Darrin Horn joined Robinson on the All Conference Team. Robinson was the SBC Tournament MVP and Darius Hall and Jeff Rogers were named to the SBC All-Tournament team. Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament
The Sun Belt Conference women's basketball tournament has been played every year since the 1982-83 academic year. The winner of the tournament is guaranteed an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. In 2007, the Sun Belt received an at-large berth, as Louisiana–Lafayette (regular season champ of the West Division) received an invite to the national tournament despite losing in the conference tournament final. The following year, the Sun Belt received an at-large berth again, as Middle Tennessee State received an invite to the national tournament. In 2010, it happened again, as Little Rock received an at-large bid, having entered the conference tourney as a #1 seed, before losing to Middle Tennessee in double overtime.
