400 Metres
The 400 metres, or 400-meter dash, is a sprint event in track and field competitions. It has been featured in the athletics (sport), athletics programme at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1964 for women. On a standard outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track. Runners start in staggered positions and race in separate lanes for the entire course. In many countries, athletes previously competed in the 440-yard dash (402.336 m)—which is a quarter of a mile and was referred to as the 'quarter-mile'—instead of the 400 m (437.445 yards), though this distance is now obsolete. Like other sprint disciplines, the 400 m involves the use of starting blocks. David McKenzie (sprinter)
David Colin McKenzie (born 3 September 1970) is a British track and field athlete who won the gold medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 1994 Commonwealth Games held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, along with teammates, Peter Crampton, Adrian Patrick, and Du'aine Ladejo. Early life McKenzie attended Ingram High School in Croydon, South London and trained with Croydon Harriers. On 11 Aug 1985 at Crystal Palace, just one month shy of his fifteenth birthday, he ran a time of 49.97s for the 400 metres, at the time the second fastest ever time for an under-15 athlete, and as at 2008 was still the third fastest time. Senior career He reached his all-time peak on 12 June 1994 when he ran 45.47s at Sheffield for Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers. Biography He won six medals at the International athletics competitions, five of these with national relays team.
