1993 In Irish Television
The following is a list of events relating to television in Ireland from 1993. Events *9 January – Three days after its premiere on British television, the hit BBC children's animated television series ''The Animals of Farthing Wood'' begins on RTÉ. It starts off with the series translated into an Irish language titled ''Cairde Na Coille'' and airing on RTÉ 1. It is still being shown on Irish television to this very day. *12 January – Charlie McCreevy is appointed Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications with responsibility for broadcasting. *21 January – Michael D. Higgins is appointed Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht with responsibility for broadcasting. *15 May – Ireland hosts and wins the Eurovision Song Contest. Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
''Extra! Extra! Read All About It!'' is an Irish television sitcom that aired on RTÉ 1 for one season of eight episodes in 1993. The show was written by Frank Sheerin, and the stand-up comedian, Morgan Jones, was a cast member. The show was notable for its negative reception. Writing in the ''Connacht Sentinel'', journalist Declan Tierney gave the programme a negative review: "to say that this is a pathetic attempt at comedy is being kind to "Extra! Extra! Read All About It!" and stated "the only indication that it ''is'' a comedy comes from the canned laughter, which is over-done and often goes on for so long that it is impossible to hear the start of the next sentence". Writer Colm Tóibín stated ''Extra! Extra!'' was "probably the worst programme RTÉ has ever shown". Brendan Glacken of ''The Irish Times'' was equally scathing: "Speaking of ''Extra! Nationwide (Irish TV Programme)
''Nationwide'' is a television programme shown in Ireland each Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening at 19:00. Produced by RTÉ Cork, and broadcast on RTÉ One for around 30 minutes, it is presented by Anne Cassin and Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, after long-serving presenter Mary Kennedy reached RTÉ's retirement age in 2019. ''Nationwide'' focuses on human interest stories and cultural events across the country. Format ''Nationwide'' is presented in the form of, most often, two on-site recordings, with one advertising break between them. It has aimed to regionalise news and human interest content, as RTÉ has worked to do previously, albeit without the increased technology and transmission costs, which would likely require total re-engineering of the country's transmission and cable television networks. Ryantown
''Ryantown'' was an RTÉ Television light entertainment show hosted by Gerry Ryan that was broadcast on Saturday evenings for one season between 1993 and 1994. It was set in Gerry Ryan's house in the fictional Ryantown. The show was broadcast during the autumn-spring season. History Following on from an earlier Saturday night show ''Secrets'', RTÉ devised a new vehicle for Gerry Ryan. The target audience for Ryantown was teenagers and twenty-somethings. Producer Julie Parsons described it as a "family show" set in a house in which "neighbours drop in and people sit around and cook and watch TV" with the TV content being provided by Ryantown News, with its anchor Reggie Ryan, Gerry Ryan's "twin brother." Each week a real couple's wedding video was featured and Brendan Donoghue did surprise outside broadcasts. Art Attacks
The Art Attacks were an English punk band from April 1977 to March 1978. Their songs released as singles were "I am a Dalek"/"Neutron Bomb" and "Punk Rock Stars"/"Rat City". The group was formed by Edwin Pouncey and Steve Spear, two students from the Royal College of Art, London for a one-off gig at the college. They were asked to do a gig at Wimbledon College of Art and this led to the band's short career. They had two tracks on the ''Live at the Vortex'' (NEMS) compilation album, ("Frankensteins Heartbeat" and "Animal Bondage") and one on the '' Streets'' ( Beggars Banquet Records) compilation album, ("Arabs in Arrads"). They played at most of the London punk club and pub venues including The Marquee, Nashville and Vortex supporting bands like Generation X, 999, The Motors and The Lurkers. Lifelines (Irish TV Series)
''Lifelines'' is an Irish television chat show presented by broadcaster Liam Ó Murchú. Filmed in front of a studio audience, each programme is devoted to a special celebrity guest. The programme ran for four series from 1993 until 1996. History ''Lifelines'' was initially devised as an appropriate summer replacement for RTÉ's flagship Friday night chat show '' The Late Late Show''. The show was presented by Liam Ó Murchú, the former host of ''Trom agus Éadrom'', a bi-lingual chat show that was broadcast in the 1970s and 1980s. The first series began on 18 June 1993 and featured seven episodes. ''Lifelines'' proved popular and returned for a second series of seven episodes on 17 April 1994. Postman Pat
''Postman Pat'' is a British stop-motion animated television series first produced by Woodland Animations. The series follows the adventures of Pat Clifton, a postman who works for Royal Mail postal service in the fictional village of Greendale (inspired by the real valley of Longsleddale near Kendal). ''Postman Pat'' first 13-episode series was screened on BBC One in 1981. John Cunliffe wrote the original treatment and scripts for the series, which was directed by animator Ivor Wood, who also worked on ''The Magic Roundabout'', ''The Wombles'', ''Paddington'', and ''The Herbs''. Following the success of the first series, four TV specials and a second series of 13 episodes were produced during the 1990s. HTV Wales
ITV Wales and West, previously known as Harlech Television (HTV), was an ITV franchise area in the United Kingdom until 31 December 2013, licensed to a broadcaster by the regulator Ofcom. There is no channel, past or present, named "ITV Wales and West". The licence relates to a "dual region", meaning that the franchise area was divided into two sub-regions, Wales and the West of England, each of which had to be served by distinct and separate ITV programme services, as more fully defined within the licence. From January 2014, the dual-region licence was split in two, with ITV Cymru Wales for Wales and ITV West Country covering the both the West of England sub-region and South West England. UTV (TV Channel)
UTV (formerly Ulster Television, branded on air as ITV1) is the ITV region covering Northern Ireland, ITV subsidiary and the former on-air name of the free-to-air public broadcast television channel serving the area. It is run by ITV plc and is responsible for the regional news service and other programmes made principally for the area. The modern TV channel, ITV, is directly descended from the network of the same name, consisting of independent regional companies which were once the only commercial TV broadcasters in their area. UTV held the licence for Northern Ireland and first went on the air on 31 October 1959. ''Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons'', often shortened to ''Captain Scarlet'', is a British science fiction television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and filmed by their production company Century 21 Productions for distributor ITC Entertainment.
