1993 World Championships In Athletics – Men's 800 Metres
These are the official results of the Men's 800 metres event at the 1993 IAAF World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. There were a total number of 44 participating athletes, with six qualifying heats, three semi-finals and the final held on Tuesday 1993-08-17. With three Kenyans qualified for the final, word was out that they might send out time qualifier Paul Ruto as the sacrificial lamb to burn out the field. Freddie Williams was the leader from the gun, but just before the break Ruto rushed to the lead and it appeared the strategy was in effect. Distance Running
Long-distance running, or endurance running, is a form of continuous running over distances of at least . Physiologically, it is largely aerobic in nature and requires stamina as well as mental strength. Within endurance running comes two different types of respiration. The more prominent side that runners experience more frequently is aerobic respiration. This occurs when oxygen is present, and the body is able to utilize oxygen to help generate energy and muscle activity. On the other side, anaerobic respiration occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen, and this is common towards the final stretch of races when there is a drive to speed up to a greater intensity. Nico Motchebon
Nico Motchebon (born 13 November 1969 in Berlin) is a former German 800 metres runner. His personal best of 1:43.91 was set on 31 July 1996 in the 800 m final of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where he finished fifth. Motchebon won bronze medals at the 1993 and 1999 IAAF World Indoor Championships. He also set a temporary European indoor record over 800 m in 1995. His 600 m indoor personal best stood as the indoor 600 m world record from 1999 until 2017. Before turning to athletics in late 1992, he competed in the modern pentathlon. Clive Terrelonge (born 30 June 1969) is a Jamaican former track and field athlete and coach. University of Connecticut. Before coaching, he was an accomplished collegiate and professional athlete who specialized in the 800m and 400m. Terrelonge was twice an Olympian for Jamaica, competing in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and in 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. At the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships, Terrelonge became the first Jamaican to win a World Championship gold medal in the 800 metres. While competing for Lincoln University (Pennsylvania), Terrelonge earned 19 Division III All-America honors in the 400m, 800m and the 4x400-meter relay. He is a former NCAA double 400 and triple 800-meter indoor/outdoor champion and held the 800-meter NCAA Division III outdoor record until Nick Symmonds of Willamette University broke it in spring 2006. John Lee Gray Jr. (born June 19, 1960) is a retired American world class 800 meter runner from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s and the holder of the 600m world best. A four-time-Olympian (1984-1996) in 1985 he set the US record of 1:42.60 at a meet in Koblenz. That time puts Gray as the nineteenth fastest performer of all time. He came seventh in the 1984 Summer Olympics, fifth in 1988, and won the bronze medal at the Barcelona Olympics of 1992. In 1993 Gray was one of the favourites to win a gold medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart as he had won the A-race at the prestigious meeting in Zurich.
