1993 Pittsburgh Pirates Season
The 1993 Pittsburgh Pirates season was the 112th in franchise history; the 107th in the National League. This was their 24th season at Three Rivers Stadium. This season saw the three-time defending National League East champions fall to 5th place in the division with a 75–87 record. In the offseason, the National League expanded to 14 teams and Barry Bonds left the Pirates and signed with the San Francisco Giants. This season was the first of the Pirates record setting twenty straight losing seasons. National League East
The National League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. Along with the American League Central it is one of two divisions to have every member win at least one World Series title. The division was created when the National League (along with the American League) added two expansion teams and divided into two divisions, East and West effective for the 1969 season. The National League's geographical alignment was rather peculiar as its partitioning was really more north and south instead of east and west. Two teams in the Eastern Time Zone, the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds, were in the same division as teams on the Pacific coast. John Robert Candelaria (born November 6, 1953) is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher. David Alan Otto (born November 12, 1964) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1987 to 1994 for the Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago Cubs. 1992 MLB Expansion Draft
On November 17, 1992, during the 1992–93 offseason, Major League Baseball (MLB) held an expansion draft in New York City to allow two expansion teams, the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies, to build their rosters prior to debuting in the National League's (NL) East and West divisions, respectively, in the 1993 MLB season. The 1990 collective bargaining agreement between MLB owners and the MLB Players Association allowed the NL to expand by two members to match the American League (AL). In June 1991, MLB accepted bids of groups from Miami, Florida, and Denver, Colorado, with debuts set for 1993. The Marlins and Rockies used the expansion draft to build their teams using different strategies. Alexander Cole Jr. (born August 17, 1965) is an American former professional baseball outfielder. Career Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 1985 MLB amateur draft, Cole would make his Major League debut with the Cleveland Indians on July 27, 1990, and appear in his final game on May 22, 1996. Known as a stolen base threat (Cole ranked fourth in the American League in 1990 with 40 stolen bases despite playing in only 63 games), the Indians in 1991 cited his speed as a prime reason for moving the outfield walls of Cleveland Municipal Stadium back.
