Elections to Newtownabbey Borough Council were held on 19 May 1993 on the same day as the other Northern Irish local government elections. Newtownabbey Borough Council
Newtownabbey Borough Council was a Local Authority in County Antrim in Northern Ireland, on the north shore of Belfast Lough just immediately north of Belfast. The Council merged with Antrim Borough Council in April 2015 under local government reform in Northern Ireland to form Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council. History Newtownabbey was founded in 1958 as a result of the Newtownabbey Urban District Act (Northern Ireland) 1957 and comprises large urban residential areas along with traditional farming communities. Its major industries include electronics, software and telecommunications development and agriculture. Council headquarters were at Mossley Mill in Newtownabbey. Towns within the area included Ballyclare and Glengormley. The University of Ulster at Jordanstown is also in the area covered by the former Council. Ken Robinson (Northern Ireland Politician)
Ken Robinson (born 1942) was a former Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Antrim from 1998 to 2011. Gordon Mawhinney
Gordon Hugh Mawhinney (born 4 January 1943) is a former politician in Northern Ireland. Mawhinney married Maureen Gribben (born 5 January 1943) on 4 April 1967.''Who's who in European Politics'' (1982, p406) In 1981, Mawhinney stood for the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland in Newtownabbey District "C", but was not elected. He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly, 1982, in South Antrim. He stood in the equivalent Westminster constituency at the 1983 general election, receiving 11.9% of the votes cast, and increased his share to 16.0% at the 1987 general election, in which he took second place. In 1987, Mawhinney was elected as Deputy Leader of the Alliance Party, a position which he held until he resigned in 1991, claiming "health and business reasons". Fraser Agnew
William Alexander Fraser Agnew, known as Fraser Agnew, is a politician in Northern Ireland who was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Belfast North from 1998 to 2003. After growing up in Ballyclare, Agnew studied at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, Belfast Technical College and the College of Business Studies. He worked as a writer and architectural draughtsperson and was elected to Newtownabbey Borough Council as an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) representative in 1980. Agnew was also elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly, 1982. In 1990, Agnew served as the Mayor of Newtownabbey. Norman Boyd
Norman Boyd (born 16 October 1961) is a Unionist politician in Northern Ireland who served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for South Antrim from 1998 to 2003. Boyd was born in Belfast and attended Belfast High School and Newtownabbey Technical College before working in banking. At the 1998 Northern Ireland Assembly election, Boyd was elected for the UK Unionist Party (UKUP) to represent South Antrim. In January 1999, he joined three of the four other UKUP Assembly members in forming the Northern Ireland Unionist Party. He acted as whip for the new group, and was selected to stand for Westminster under his new party label at the 2000 South Antrim by-election, but withdrew during the campaign, calling on his supporters to back the Democratic Unionist Party candidate William McCrea. John Kenneth Blair (born 10 February 1966) is an Alliance Party of Northern Ireland, Alliance Party politician, who has been a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for South Antrim (Assembly constituency), South Antrim since 2018. Tommy Kirkham
Tommy Kirkham is a Northern Ireland loyalist political figure and former councillor. Beginning his political career with the Democratic Unionist Party, he was then associated with the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and the Ulster Political Research Group although he has since been expelled from both groups. He was a former deputy mayor of Newtownabbey and sat on Newtownabbey Borough Council as an Independent Loyalist.
