1993 French Open – Women's Singles
Steffi Graf defeated Mary Joe Fernández in the final, 4–6, 6–2, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1993 French Open. With the win, Graf recaptured the world No. 1 ranking. It was Fernández' third and last appearance in a major singles final. Monica Seles was the three-time reigning champion, but was unable to compete due to being stabbed the previous month. Widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, she was ranked world No. 1 for a record 377 weeks and won 22 major singles titles, the second-most since the start of the Open Era in 1968 and the third-most of all-time. In 1988, Graf became the first tennis player to achieve the Golden Slam by winning all four major singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year. Katerina Georgieva Maleeva ( bg, Катерина Георгиева Малеева; born 7 May 1969) is a former top 10 Bulgarian tennis player. She won eleven singles and two doubles WTA Tour titles. Her best position in the WTA rankings was No. 6 in 1990. Biography Born in Sofia, Maleeva is the second oldest of the three children of Georgi Maleev and Yuliya Berberyan. Her mother came from an Armenian family, which found refuge in Bulgaria after the 1896 Armenian massacres in the Ottoman Empire, and was the best Bulgarian tennis player in the 1960s. After she retired from professional tennis in the 1970s, Berberyan started a coaching career. She was the coach of her three daughters, Katerina, Manuela and Magdalena, each of whom eventually became WTA top 10 players. Beatriz "Gigi" Fernández (born February 22, 1964) is a Puerto Rican former professional tennis player. Fernández won 17 major doubles titles and two Olympic gold medals representing the United States, and reached the world No. 1 ranking in doubles. Louise Allen (born January 7, 1962) is a retired American tennis player. Allen attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she was a four-time All-American (1981-1984) and won the 1983 NCAA Division I Women's Doubles Championship and the 1983 Pan American Games women's doubles, both times with partner Gretchen Rush.
