1993 FINA Short Course World Championships
The 1st Short Course Swimming World Championships were organized by FINA and held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, December 2–5, 1993. The meet featured competition in a short course (25 meter) pool. During the championships, a total of 12 world records were broken: 10 in the women's events and 2 in men's events, both in relays. China won the most events, ten, all in women's events. Le Jingyi won two individual and three relay events to travel home with five golds; Dai Guohong went home with four golds and one silver. In the men's events, the USA and Australia won three events each. Tripp Schwenk of the USA garnered three golds, winning the two backstroke events and also swimming on the USA's winning medley relay team. Also winning 2 events each on the men's side were Fernando Scherer of Brazil (100m freestyle; 400m freestyle relay), Daniel Kowalski of Australia (400m and 1500m freestyles). Tripp Schwenk
William Douglas "Tripp" Schwenk III (born June 17, 1971) is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder. Schwenk represented the United States at two consecutive Olympic Games. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, he competed in the men's 200-meter backstroke and finished fifth in the event final in a time of 1:59.73. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, he received a gold medal for swimming for the winning U.S. team in the preliminary heats of the men's 4×100-meter medley. Individually, Schwenk also received the silver medal for recording a 1:58.99 second-place finish in the men's 200-meter backstroke. He also competed in the men's 100-meter backstroke, finishing in fifth place in the final with a time of 55.30 seconds. Rogério Aoki Romero (born 22 November 1969 in Londrina, Paraná) is a former backstroke swimmer from Brazil, who competed at five consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country, starting in 1988. A resident of Belo Horizonte, he won the gold medal in the 200-metre backstroke at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. Twelve years later he once again did so at the 2003 Pan Am Games. Adam Ruckwood
Adam Ruckwood (born 13 September 1974) is a male English former competitive swimmer and backstroke specialist. Swimming career Ruckwood represented Great Britain at three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1992 (Barcelona, Spain). At the ASA National British Championships he won the 100 metres backstroke title three times (1998, 2000, 2001) and the 200 metres backstroke title seven times (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000). Ruckwood also competed in three Commonwealth Games; he represented England where he won a gold and silver medals in the backstroke events, at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Four years later he represented England again, at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and in 2002 he competed in his third Games.
