1992 West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1992 West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 7–9 at the Chiles Center on the campus of the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon. This was the sixth edition of the tournament. Top seed Pepperdine defeated #4 seed Gonzaga 73–70 in the championship game to successfully defend their WCC tournament title. Runner-up Gonzaga had been winless in the first five editions, losing its opener (quarterfinal) each year. The Waves earned the automatic bid to the 64-team NCAA tournament and were seeded eleventh in the Midwest regional. Chiles Center
The Earle A. & Virginia H. Chiles Center is a 4,852-seat multi-purpose arena in Portland, Oregon, USA. The arena opened in 1984. It is home to the University of Portland Pilots men's and women's basketball teams as well as the women's volleyball team. It hosted the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament in 1992 and 2007. The arena is also used as for other athletic tournaments as well as for concerts and other special events such as high school graduations. It contains of arena floor space. History Construction on the center began in 1983 with an endowment from the Chiles Foundation, and the new facility opened in 1984. In 2006, the school completed $1 million in upgrades to the women's locker rooms, followed by renovations of the weight room in 2008. 1991–92 Pepperdine Waves Men's Basketball Team
The 1991–92 Pepperdine Waves men's basketball team represented Pepperdine University in the 1991–92 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by head coach Tom Asbury. The Waves played their home games at the Firestone Fieldhouse and were members of the West Coast Conference. They finished the season 24–7, 14–0 in WCC play to win the regular season conference title by a 5-game margin. After completing an unbeaten record in the conference regular season, Pepperdine ran their conference winning streak to 27 consecutive games (33 games when including WCC Tournament play) and won the West Coast Conference tournament to receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the second straight season. Tom Asbury
Thomas Sydnor Asbury (born July 14, 1945) is a retired American men's college basketball coach. He spent two separate terms as head coach of Pepperdine University, retiring from that position in 2011. He also was a head coach for Kansas State University and served as an assistant coach at Pepperdine, the University of Wyoming (his alma mater), and the University of Alabama. Career Pepperdine Asbury was an assistant coach at Pepperdine for nine seasons before succeeding Jim Harrick as head coach. Asbury was very successful in his first stint at Pepperdine, becoming the conference coach of the year twice and compiling a 125–59 record in his first six years. He took the Waves to the NCAA Tournament in 1991, 1992 and 1994, as well as two NIT appearances, three regular-season WCC titles and three WCC Tournament championships. West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament is the annual concluding tournament for the NCAA college basketball in the West Coast Conference (WCC). The winner of the tournament each year is guaranteed a place in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament for that season. Through 2008, the tournament was played on a rotating basis at the home courts of member teams. The 2009 edition was the first played at a neutral site, namely Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas. The semifinals are broadcast nationally on ESPN2 and the championship is broadcast nationally on ESPN. The tournament has used several formats in its history, though seeding in all formats has been based strictly on conference record (with tiebreakers used as needed). The 1992 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 19, 1992, and ended with the championship game on April 6 in Minneapolis. A total of 63 games were played.
