1992 CAA Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1992 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball tournament was held March 7–9 at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia. In only their first year in the CAA, Old Dominion defeated in the championship game, 78–73, to win their third CAA men's basketball tournament. The Monarchs, therefore, earned an automatic bid to the 1992 NCAA tournament. Old Dominion rejoined the CAA from the Sun Belt Conference prior to the season, replacing Navy, who departed to join the Patriot League. Richmond Coliseum
Richmond Coliseum is a defunct arena located in downtown Richmond, Virginia, with a capacity of 13,500 that was most often used for various large concerts. The arena opened in 1971 and the region is looking to replace the aging facility with a larger one. The arena was quietly shuttered in February 2019 while new proposed replacements are in development. History Until John Paul Jones Arena opened in 2006, the Richmond Coliseum was the largest sports arena in Virginia. The Virginia Commonwealth University Rams men's basketball team played in the arena until the 7,500-seat Siegel Center opened on the VCU campus in 1999. 1991–92 Old Dominion Monarchs Basketball Team
The 1991–92 Old Dominion Monarchs basketball team represented Old Dominion University in the 1991–92 college basketball season. This was head coach Oliver Purnell's first of three seasons at Old Dominion. The Monarchs compete in the Colonial Athletic Association and played their home games at the ODU Fieldhouse. They finished the season 15–15, 8–6 in CAA play to finish in fourth place during the regular season. They went on to win the 1992 CAA men's basketball tournament to earn the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Oliver Purnell
Oliver Gordon Purnell Jr. (born May 19, 1953) is an American former college basketball coach. He served as the head men's basketball coach at Radford University from 1988 to 1991, Old Dominion University from 1991 to 1994, the University of Dayton from 1994 to 2003, Clemson University from 2003 to 2010, and DePaul University from 2010 to 2015, compiling a career record of 448–386. Early years Purnell was born in Berlin, Maryland, the second of Oliver Sr. and Phyllis' four children. He attended Stephen Decatur High School, where he played on the boys' basketball team that captured the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Class B championship in 1970. Purnell was recruited to play basketball at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. While at Old Dominion, Purnell enjoyed a highly successful playing career, finishing 18th on ODU's all-time scoring list with 1,090 points and leading the Monarchs to the 1975 NCAA Division II national championship. 1992 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1992 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 19, 1992, and ended with the championship game on April 6 in Minneapolis. A total of 63 games were played. Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski, defeated the Michigan Wolverines, coached by Steve Fisher, 71–51 to claim their second consecutive national championship. Bobby Hurley of Duke was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Michigan subsequently vacated its final two tournament games as part of the University of Michigan basketball scandal. The Old Dominion Monarchs men’s basketball team represents Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, United States in NCAA Division I men's competition. The school's team currently competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
