1992 Big West Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1992 Big West Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 13–15 at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California. New Mexico State defeated in the final, 74–73, capturing their first Big West title. Three-time defending champions did not participate in this year's tournament due to NCAA sanctions. The Aggies subsequently received an automatic bid to the 1992 NCAA tournament. Format There were no changed to the tournament format for this season, with the Big West maintaining an eight-team tournament. In turn, only the top eight teams, based on regular season conference records, qualified for the tournament field. , who finished first in the regular season standings, were barred from participating due to NCAA sanctions. 1991–92 New Mexico State Aggies Basketball Team
The 1991–92 New Mexico State Aggies men's basketball team represented New Mexico State University in the 1991–92 college basketball season. This was Neil McCarthy's 7th season as head coach. The Aggies played their home games at Pan American Center and competed in the Big West Conference. They finished the season 25–8, 12–6 in Big West play to earn a third-place finish in the conference regular season standings. They won the Big West tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as No. 12 seed in the West region. In the opening round, New Mexico State upset No. 5 seed DePaul, 81–73. Neil McCarthy (basketball)
Neil McCarthy (May 18, 1939 – September 18, 2021) was an American college basketball coach. He was head coach of the Weber State Wildcats team from 1974 to 1985 and at the New Mexico State Aggies from 1985 to 1997. At Weber State, McCarthy led the Wildcats to four NCAA tournaments, including the school's first NCAA Tournament win since reaching the Sweet 16 in 1972. He remained Weber State's winningest coach until Randy Rahe broke his wins record in 2016. During most of McCarthy's tenure at New Mexico State, the Aggies were the second-best team in what became the Big West Conference, behind UNLV. After UNLV hit the skids, McCarthy took advantage and led the Aggies to four straight Big West tournament titles and four straight NCAA Tournaments from 1990 to 1994. Sam Crawford (basketball)
Sam Crawford (born April 18, 1970) is an American former professional basketball player. An agile and diminutive point guard at 5 ft 8 in tall, he attended Moorpark community college for two years before transferring to a Division I program, New Mexico State. In 1992–93 he led the NCAA in assists with a 9.1 average, was awarded the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award for the best college player under 6 ft and was an AP Honorable Mention. He is the all-time assists leader at New Mexico State with 592. After his senior year of college he went undrafted in the 1993 NBA draft and had a short professional career in the CBA. 1992 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1992 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 19, 1992, and ended with the championship game on April 6 in Minneapolis. A total of 63 games were played. Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski, defeated the Michigan Wolverines, coached by Steve Fisher, 71–51 to claim their second consecutive national championship.
