1991–92 New Mexico State Aggies Basketball Team
The 1991–92 New Mexico State Aggies men's basketball team represented New Mexico State University in the 1991–92 college basketball season. This was Neil McCarthy's 7th season as head coach. The Aggies played their home games at Pan American Center and competed in the Big West Conference. They finished the season 25–8, 12–6 in Big West play to earn a third-place finish in the conference regular season standings. They won the Big West tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as No. 12 seed in the West region. In the opening round, New Mexico State upset No. 5 seed DePaul, 81–73. The Aggies followed that success by defeating No. 13 seed Southwestern Louisiana to reach the Sweet Sixteen. Neil McCarthy (basketball)
Neil McCarthy (May 18, 1939 – September 18, 2021) was an American college basketball coach. He was head coach of the Weber State Wildcats team from 1974 to 1985 and at the New Mexico State Aggies from 1985 to 1997. At Weber State, McCarthy led the Wildcats to four NCAA tournaments, including the school's first NCAA Tournament win since reaching the Sweet 16 in 1972. He remained Weber State's winningest coach until Randy Rahe broke his wins record in 2016. During most of McCarthy's tenure at New Mexico State, the Aggies were the second-best team in what became the Big West Conference, behind UNLV. After UNLV hit the skids, McCarthy took advantage and led the Aggies to four straight Big West tournament titles and four straight NCAA Tournaments from 1990 to 1994. Titan Gym is a 4,000 seat, indoor multi-purpose stadium on the campus of California State University, Fullerton in Fullerton, California, Fullerton, California. Selland Arena is a multi-purpose arena built in 1966 that makes up part of a four-venue complex of the Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center in Fresno, California. It is named after former Fresno mayor Arthur L. Selland and has had over 10 million people walk through its doors in its over 50-year history. The 1991–92 UC Irvine Anteaters men's basketball team represented the University of California, Irvine during the 1991–92 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Anteaters were led by first year head coach Rod Baker and played at the Bren Events Center. They were members of the Big West Conference.
