These are the official results of the Men's Shot Put event at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. There were a total number of 23 participating athletes, with the final held on Saturday August 31, 1991. Werner Günthör of Switzerland won the competition with a throw of 21.67 metres. Shot Put
The shot put is a track and field event involving "putting" (throwing) a heavy spherical ball—the ''shot''—as far as possible. The shot put competition for men has been a part of the modern Olympics since their revival in 1896, and women's competition began in 1948. History Homer mentions competitions of rock throwing by soldiers during the Siege of Troy but there is no record of any dead weights being thrown in Greek competitions. The first evidence for stone- or weight-throwing events were in the Scottish Highlands, and date back to approximately the first century. In the 16th century King Henry VIII was noted for his prowess in court competitions of weight and hammer throwing. Jan Sagedal
Jan Sagedal (born 19 June 1960) is a retired Norwegian shot putter. He represented Froland IL, Sørild FIK and IK Tjalve. Biography He finished fourteenth at the 1984 European Indoor Championships, thirteenth at the 1990 European Indoor Championships, thirteenth at the 1991 IAAF World Indoor Championships and ninth at the 1992 European Indoor Championships. He also competed at the World Championships in 1987 and 1991 without reaching the finals. He became Norwegian champion in 1986 and 1998. His personal best throw was 20.76 metres, achieved in June 1986 in Bodø. This would have been a new Norwegian record at the time if not Lars Arvid Nilsen put the shot 20.91 metres in Indianapolis the same day. Sagedal's result places him third among Norwegian shot putters through all time, behind Nilsen and Georg Andersen. Alessandro Andrei
Alessandro Andrei (born 3 January 1959) is an Italian former shot putter. He was born in Florence. Biography Andrei threw with his right hand, using the glide technique (at time many elite-level shot putters had switched to the spin/rotation style.) Andrei won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, California. In 1987 he broke the world record three times in the same competition with successive throws of 22.72, 22.84 & 22.91 m (and finishing the sequence with a throw of 22.74 m). Dragan Perić ( sr, Драган Перић, born 8 May 1964) is a Serbian retired shot putter who occasionally competed in the discus throw. He holds the Serbian records in both events. He represented Yugoslavia/Serbia and Montenegro in four consecutive Summer Olympics from 1992 to 2004, in eight World Championships from 1991 to 2005 and three European Championships from 1990 to 1998. Paul Edwards (athlete)
Paul Michael Edwards (born 16 February 1959 in Chiswick, Greater London) is a retired professional athlete who competed in the men's shot put event during his career. He competed for both Wales and England during his career and twice represented Great Britain at the Summer Olympics: in 1988 and in 1992. Edwards was affiliated with the Walton Athletic Club and Belgrave Harriers in London. He represented Great Britain 43 times and won 11 AAA titles and 5 UK titles.
