National Stadium (Tokyo, 1958)
was a multi-purpose stadium in Kasumigaokamachi, Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. The stadium served as the main stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as being the venue for track and field events at the 1964 Summer Olympics. The Japan national football team's home matches and major football club cup finals were held at the stadium. The stadium's official capacity was 57,363, but the seating capacity was only 48,000 seats. Demolition was completed in May 2015, and the site was redeveloped with a Japan National Stadium, new larger-capacity Olympic Stadium. The new stadium was the main venue for the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics, Paralympics. The original plans for the new stadium were scrapped in July 2015 by Prime Minister of Japan, Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who announced a rebid after a public outcry because of increased building costs. Andrew Valmon
Andrew Orlando Valmon (born January 1, 1965) is an American former 400 meters runner. Valmon was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Manchester Township, New Jersey, where he attended Manchester Township High School. He attended college at Seton Hall University and graduated in 1987 with a degree in communications. Valmon won the silver medal at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 1991 in Seville. In 1992 he won a gold medal with the American 4 × 400 m relay team at the Olympic Games in Barcelona. The same year, Valmon set his personal best of 44.28 seconds. He is now the track & field head coach at the University of Maryland, and coaches a summer camp at the university. He is married to Meredith Rainey, who is also an Olympic runner. Olivier Noirot (born 26 August 1969, at Bordeaux) is a former French athlete, who specialised in the 400 meters. Career Running for club ASPTT Bordeaux, Olivier Noirot is the son of middle-distance runner André Noirot and specialist in 400 meters Monique Wideman, both of whom were Champions of France several times in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1989 Olivier won his first national title in the 400 m 46.29s and then won the title the following year over the same distance in the time of 46.04s. He made his debut on the international stage on the occasion of the 1990 European Championships at Split where he was eliminated in the semifinals of the individual competition, and placed seventh in the 4 × 400 relay with his French teammates. Samson Kitur
Samson Kitur (February 25, 1966 — April 25, 2003) was a Kenyan athlete, and an Olympic medalist in 1992. Biography Unlike most of his compatriots, who run in distances 800 metres and up, Kitur specialised in the 400 metres. He won the continental championship in 1991, and the next year he took the bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics, behind winner Quincy Watts. Derek Redmond
Derek Anthony Redmond (born 3 September 1965) is a retired British sprinter. During his career, he held the British record for the 400 metres sprint, and won gold medals in the 4x400 metres relay at the World Championships and European Championships. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Redmond tore his hamstring in the 400 metres semi-final but continued the race limping and, with assistance from his father, managed to complete a full lap of the track as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. Although Redmond was disqualified and listed as "Did Not Finish" due to the outside assistance finishing the race, the incident has become a well-remembered moment in Olympic history, having been the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee's "Celebrate Humanity" videos and been used in advertisements by Visa as an illustration of the Olympic spirit and featured in Nike's "Courage" commercials in 2008.
