The 1990 United States Senate election in Georgia was held on November 6, 1990. Incumbent Democratic Party (United States), Democratic U.S. Senator Sam Nunn won re-election to a fourth term uncontested. As of 2021, this is the second to last time that a candidate from either party won a race in Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia with 100% of the vote. The other time being in the 1992 Atlanta City Council election where Bob Glettman won with 100.0% of the vote, running unopposed. Sam Nunn
Samuel Augustus Nunn Jr. (born September 8, 1938) is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Georgia (1972–1997) as a member of the Democratic Party. After leaving Congress, Nunn co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a charitable organization working to prevent catastrophic attacks with nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, for which he is a co-chair. His political experience and credentials on national defense reportedly earned him consideration as a potential running mate for presidential candidates John Kerry and Barack Obama after they became their party's nominees. Early life Nunn was born in Macon, Georgia, the son of Mary Elizabeth (née Cannon) and Samuel Augustus Nunn, who was an attorney and mayor of Perry, Georgia. Nunn was raised in Perry. Georgia was admitted to the Union on January 2, 1788. The state has had senators since the 1st Congress. Its Senate seats were declared vacant in Mar 1861 owing to its secession from the Union. 1990 United States Senate Elections
The 1990 United States Senate elections were held on Tuesday, November 6, 1990. The Democratic Party increased its majority with a net gain of one seat from the Republican Party. The election took place in the middle of President George H. W. Bush's term, and, as with most other midterm elections, the party not holding the presidency gained seats in Congress. These elections featured the smallest seat change in history since the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913 with only one seat changing parties, and this would happen again in 2022. That election featured Democrat Paul Wellstone defeating incumbent Republican Rudy Boschwitz in Minnesota. To date, this is the last cycle in which Democratic candidates won U.S. Senate elections in Oklahoma and Tennessee.
