1990 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections were held in the United Kingdom on 3 May 1990. They were the last local elections held before the resignation of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in November 1990. The main opposition Labour Party gained 284 seats, bringing their number of councillors to 8,920 - their highest since 1981. Their projected share of the vote was 44%, an increase of 2% from 1989. The governing Conservative Party lost 222 seats, leaving them with 9,020 councillors. Their share of the vote was projected to be 33%, a fall of 3% from the previous year. This mounted further pressure on the government of Margaret Thatcher, which had been declining for a year following the introduction of the controversial poll tax, and was a major boost for opposition leader Neil Kinnock, whose Labour Party was enjoying a wide lead in the opinion polls with a general election no more than two years away. Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher (; 13 October 19258 April 2013) was a British politician and stateswoman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. The London Borough of Haringey (pronounced , same as Harringay) is a London borough in North London, classified by some definitions as part of Inner London, and by others as part of Outer London. The 1990 Hammersmith and Fulham Council election took place on 3 May 1990 to elect members of Hammersmith and Fulham London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election and the Labour party stayed in overall control of the council. Background In five out of the six by-elections since the previous Council was elected, the previous party had retained the seat. In May 1989 Labour won the seat previously held by Simon Knott for the Liberal Democrats, following his resignation from the Council. The Royal Borough of Greenwich (, , or ) is a London borough in southeast Greater London. The London Borough of Greenwich was formed in 1965 by the London Government Act 1963.
