1990 NCAA Division I-A Football Season
The 1990 NCAA Division I-A football season ended with a split national championship and the ensuing controversy helped lead to the creation of the Bowl Coalition, a precursor to the Bowl Championship Series. The national title was split between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Buffaloes (11–1–1) took the AP poll while the Yellow Jackets (11–0–1) took the UPI Coaches poll by one vote over Colorado, 847 to 846. During the season Colorado had a particularly controversial victory over Missouri in what would later be known as the "Fifth Down Game". Rule changes * Approved reducing the width of the goal posts from 23 feet 9 inches to 18 feet 6 inches starting in 1991. * Mandated visible 25-second clocks at each end zone. * Allowed the defense to advance fumbles that occur beyond the line of scrimmage. 1990 Miami Hurricanes Football Team
The 1990 Miami Hurricanes football team represented the University of Miami during the 1990 NCAA Division I-A football season. It was the Hurricanes' 65th season of football. The Hurricanes were led by second-year head coach Dennis Erickson and played their home games at the Orange Bowl. Coming off the school's third National Championship in six years in 1989, Miami came in to the 1990 season favored by most experts to repeat as National Champions. However, a season opening loss to BYU and a later defeat by Notre Dame dashed those chances and the Canes finished the season 10–2 overall. 1990 Washington Huskies Football Team
The 1990 Washington Huskies football team represented the University of Washington in the 1990 NCAA Division I-A football season. The Huskies won their first conference championship since 1981 and defeated #17 Iowa in the Rose Bowl by twelve points, 46–34. It was the first victory in that game in nine years as well, when Washington crushed Iowa 28–0 in the 1982 game. The Huskies were led by head coach Don James, offensive coordinator Gary Pinkel, and defensive coordinator Jim Lambright. Pinkel left Washington after the season to become head coach at Toledo, where he stayed for a decade and then moved to Missouri. Lambright succeeded James as head coach of the Huskies in August 1993. Five Huskies were selected in the 1991 NFL draft, led by running back Greg Lewis and defensive back Charles Mincy. Sophomore defensive lineman Steve Emtman was the first overall pick in 1992. 1991 Hall Of Fame Bowl
The 1991 Hall of Fame Bowl featured the fourteenth-ranked Clemson Tigers and the sixteenth-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini. It was the fifth edition of the Hall of Fame Bowl. Clemson's Chris Gardocki kicked an 18-yard field goal as the Tigers built a 3–0 lead. They led 10–0 after DeChane Cameron threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Doug Thomas. In the second quarter, Clemson got another touchdown pass from Cameron, and a 34-yard interception return from Arlington Nunn giving Clemson a 24–0 halftime lead. Gardocki kicked field goals of 26 and 43 yards in the third and fourth quarter, respectively, as Clemson pulled away for a 30–0 victory. The 1991 Gator Bowl was a college football bowl game played on January 1, 1991. The Big Ten Conference co-champion Michigan Wolverines defeated the Ole Miss Rebels of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), 35–3. For sponsorship reasons, the game was officially known as the Mazda Gator Bowl. This game was the last SEC–Big Ten matchup in the Gator Bowl for twenty years; the bowl entered into an exclusive contract featuring those two conferences beginning with the 2011 Gator Bowl. The 1991 Sunkist Fiesta Bowl, part of the 1990 bowl game season, took place on January 1, 1991, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. The competing teams were the Alabama Crimson Tide, representing the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and the Louisville Cardinals, competing as a football independent. In what was the 20th edition of the Fiesta Bowl, Louisville won the game 34–7. The 1990 Virginia Cavaliers football team represented the University of Virginia in the 1990 NCAA Division I-A football season. The Cavaliers offense scored 464 points while the defense allowed 227 points. Led by head coach George Welsh, the Cavaliers competed in the Sugar Bowl, losing 23-22. This Virginia team is noteworthy for having achieved a No. 1 national ranking in the Associated Press college football poll for two weeks during the season, starting on October 16 of that year and ending with a loss to Georgia Tech. The Cavaliers held the nation's top spot through the poll of October 30, but losses in three of four games left them unranked in the AP poll by the end of the regular season.
