Lieutenant Governor Of Virginia
The lieutenant governor of Virginia is a constitutional officer of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The lieutenant governor is elected every four years along with the governor and attorney general. The office is currently held by Winsome Earle Sears, who was elected in 2021 and is the first woman of color to hold this position. The governor and lieutenant governor are elected separately and thus may be of different political parties. The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two parts of the Virginia General Assembly, the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years; unlike most states, these elections take place during odd-numbered years. John Chichester (American Politician)
John Hansford Chichester (born August 26, 1937) was the President Pro Tempore of the Virginia Senate. He represented the 28th district in the Senate from 1978 to 2007. Biography Chichester first entered the Virginia Senate by winning a special election necessitated by the death of Paul Manns. He was approached to replace retiring Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson in 1984, but declined. Chichester won the 1985 Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, but was defeated in the general election by state senator L. Douglas Wilder, who would go on to become the first African-American state governor since Reconstruction. Chichester returned to the Senate, where he accumulated seniority and was mentored by Democratic state senator Hunter Andrews. Mary Sue Terry (born September 28, 1947) is an American Democratic politician from Virginia. Early life Terry was born the daughter of Nathaniel Chatham Terry and Nannie Ruth Terry in Martinsville, Virginia. She was an active and enthusiastic Democrat as a child. She was graduated from Hardin-Reynolds Memorial School in Critz, Virginia in 1965. She earned a BA in political science from the University of Richmond's Westhampton College in 1969, master's in government (1970) and law (1973) degrees from the University of Virginia and its law school.
