The 1989 season was the Phillies 107th season. The Phillies finished in 6th place in the National League East for the second consecutive season. It would also be Mike Schmidt's final season. National League East
The National League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. Along with the American League Central it is one of two divisions to have every member win at least one World Series title. The division was created when the National League (along with the American League) added two expansion teams and divided into two divisions, East and West effective for the 1969 season. The National League's geographical alignment was rather peculiar as its partitioning was really more north and south instead of east and west. Two teams in the Eastern Time Zone, the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds, were in the same division as teams on the Pacific coast. This was due to the demands of the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, who refused to support expansion unless they were promised they would be kept together in the newly created East division. Tom Nieto
Thomas Andrew Nieto (born October 27, 1960) is an American former professional baseball catcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals, Montreal Expos, Minnesota Twins, and Philadelphia Phillies. Nieto is formerly the manager of the Minor League Baseball (MiLB) Rochester Red Wings, the Twins’ Triple-A affiliate. He previously served in various coaching capacities for the New York Yankees and New York Mets. Stephen Blair Stanicek (born June 19, 1961) is a former Major League Baseball player. He played parts of two seasons in the majors, for the Milwaukee Brewers and for the Philadelphia Phillies. He played 13 games, twelve as a pinch hitter and one as a designated hitter. Amateur career Stanicek was drafted out of Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois in the 16th round of the 1979 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He opted to play collegiate baseball for the University of Nebraska. Curtis Glenn Ford (born October 11, 1960), is an American former professional baseball outfielder, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, from through . Career Ford attended Murrah High School then Jackson State University and played college baseball for the Jackson State Tigers. The St. Louis Cardinals selected Ford in the fourth round of the 1981 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. He made his MLB debut with the Cardinals on June 22, 1985.
