1989 Hopman Cup
The 1989 Hopman Cup was the first edition to the Hopman Cup tennis event located at the Burswood Entertainment Complex in Perth, Western Australia. The event was held from 28 December 1988 through 1 January 1989. Miloslav Mečíř and Helena Suková of Czechoslovakia beat the Australian team of Hana Mandlíková and Pat Cash. Hardcourt
A hardcourt (or hard court) is a surface or floor on which a sport is played, most usually in reference to tennis courts. It is typically made of rigid materials such as asphalt or concrete, and covered with acrylic resins to seal the surface and mark the playing lines, while providing some cushioning. Historically, hardwood surfaces were also in use in indoor settings, similar to an indoor basketball court, but these surfaces are rare now. Tennis Tennis hard courts are made of synthetic/acrylic layers on top of a concrete or asphalt foundation and can vary in color. These courts tend to play medium-fast to fast because there is little energy absorption by the court, as with grass courts but unlike clay courts. Pascale Paradis
Pascale Paradis-Mangon (born 24 April 1966) is a former professional tennis player from France. Paradis was the World Junior Champion in women's singles in 1983. Although she failed to reach the heights predicted for her at that time, she did reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 1988, defeating Manuela Maleeva, Nathalie Herreman, Robin White and Anne Minter before falling to Steffi Graf. She finished 1988 ranked number 20 on the WTA rankings. Henry Christian Hopman CBE (12 August 1906 – 27 December 1985) was an Australian tennis player and coach. Early life Harry Hopman was born on 12 August 1906 in Glebe, Sydney as the third child of John Henry Hopman, a schoolteacher, and Jennie Siberteen, née Glad. His family then moved to Parramatta. Hopman started playing tennis at the age of 13 and, playing barefoot, won an open singles tournament on a court in the playground of Rosehill Public School where his father was headmaster. He was later a student at Parramatta High School where he played tennis and cricket. Davis Cup Hopman was the successful captain-coach of 22 Australian Davis Cup teams from 1939 to 1967. Slobodan Živojinović
Slobodan "Bobo" Živojinović ( sr-cyr, Слободан Живојиновић, ; born 23 July 1963) is a Serbian former professional tennis player who competed for SFR Yugoslavia. Together with Nenad Zimonjić, he is the only tennis player from Serbia to be the world No. 1 in doubles. As a singles player, he reached the semifinals of the 1985 Australian Open and the 1986 Wimbledon Championships, achieving a career-high ranking of world No. 19 in October 1987. Karmen Škulj
Carmen Wiedenmann (born 25 November 1967) is a Slovenian former professional tennis player. During her career she represented Yugoslavia and was known by her birth name Karmen Škulj. Biography Škulj comes from a family with a history in tennis. Two uncles Aleksander and Borut both played competitively and her aunty Irena competed for Yugoslavia in the Federation Cup. The Škulj Tenis Center in Dobrova was established by the family. From 1986 to 1988, Škulj appeared in a total of eight ties for the Yugoslavia Federation Cup team. She also represented Yugoslavia at the 1989 Hopman Cup, where she teamed up with Slobodan Živojinović. Škulj has a niece, Maja Živec-Škulj, who played on the WTA Tour in the 1990s. Her son Luca featured on the ITF junior circuit and plays collegiate tennis for the University of Tennessee. Shuzo Matsuoka
is a retired Japanese professional tennis player, sports commentator, and entertainer. A former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, Matsuoka won one singles title during his career, in Seoul in 1992. In the same year, he reached a career-high ranking of world No. 46. Professional career Matsuoka turned professional in 1986. In 1989, he finished runner-up in the top-level tournament at Wellington, and captured the doubles title in Auckland. 1991 saw Matsuoka achieve his career-best Masters result, when he reached the quarter-finals of the 1991 Canada Masters in Montreal, beating Michael Chang in a dramatic 3-set battle en route. Michael Jeremy Bates (born 19 June 1962) is a British former professional tennis player. He was ranked UK number 1 in 1987 and from 1989 to 1994. He reached a career-high Association of Tennis Professionals, ATP world ranking of 54 from 17 April 1995 to 23 April 1995. During his career he won two Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, The Championships, Wimbledon, Wimbledon in 1987 and the Australian Open in 1991, with tennis partner Jo Durie as well as one singles title and three men's doubles titles. Sarah Loosemore
Sarah Loosemore (born 15 June 1971) is a retired professional tennis player from Wales. She is now a qualified solicitor. Born in Cardiff but brought up in Dinas Powys by solicitor father John (Grandy) and tennis coach mother Pam (Nanny), Loosemore played on the WTA from the late 1980s until 1992. She was the youngest female British competitor at Wimbledon at age 17 in 1988. And before that played in junior Wimbledon for a number of years prior.
