1989 Glasgow Central By-election
The Glasgow Central by-election, in the Glasgow Central (UK Parliament constituency), Glasgow Central United Kingdom constituencies, constituency, was held on 15 June 1989. It was caused by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament, Bob McTaggart. The Scottish National Party had high hopes of repeating their victory from the previous year at the 1988 Glasgow Govan by-election, by-election for the Glasgow Govan (UK Parliament constituency), Glasgow Govan seat, where Jim Sillars gained the seat from Labour. For Glasgow Central, the SNP chose a close associate of their Govan victor Alex Neil (politician), Alex Neil. However, the hope for victory did not transpire for the SNP, as Mike Watson, Baron Watson of Invergowrie, Mike Watson retained the seat for the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party with a 6,462 majority, despite a 20.3% rise in the SNP share of the votes cast. Glasgow Central (UK Parliament Constituency)
Glasgow Central is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (at Westminster). In its current form, the constituency was first used at the 2005 general election, but there was also a ''Glasgow Central'' constituency that existed from 1885 to 1997. The sitting MP is Alison Thewliss of the Scottish National Party (SNP), who was first elected in May 2015. This constituency was also the seat of the former Conservative Prime Minister Bonar Law, who was the shortest-serving UK Prime Minister of the twentieth century. 2009 Glasgow North East By-election
The 2009 Glasgow North East by-election was a by-election for the Parliament of the United Kingdom's House of Commons constituency of Glasgow North East. The by-election was held on 12 November 2009 following the resignation of Michael Martin as an MP and as Speaker of the House of Commons following the MPs' expenses scandal. Martin was the first Speaker since Sir John Trevor in 1695 to be forced from office. Willie Bain, the Scottish Labour Party candidate, won with 59% of the vote. Just 33% of the electorate voted, which is the lowest ever percentage turnout in a Scottish by-election to the House of Commons. There was a longer than normal gap between a seat falling vacant and the by-election. Scotland has elections to several bodies: the Scottish Parliament, the United Kingdom Parliament, local councils and community councils. Before the United Kingdom left the European Union, Scotland elected members to the European Parliament. Scottish Parliament Scottish Parliamentary elections use the Additional Member System (AMS). 1987 United Kingdom General Election
The 1987 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 11 June 1987, to elect 650 members to the House of Commons. The election was the third consecutive general election victory for the Conservative Party, and second landslide under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher, who became the first Prime Minister since the Earl of Liverpool in 1820 to lead a party into three successive electoral victories. The Conservatives ran a campaign focusing on lower taxes, a strong economy and strong defence. They also emphasised that unemployment had just fallen below the 3 million mark for the first time since 1981, and inflation was standing at 4%, its lowest level since the 1960s. Bill Kidd
William Kidd (born 24 July 1956) is a Scottish National Party (SNP) politician, and Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Glasgow Anniesland constituency since 2011, having previously represented the Glasgow region from 2007–2011. He is currently the Convenor of the Cross Party Group on Nuclear Disarmament and Deputy Convenor of the Cross Party Group on Human Trafficking. He previously served as Chief Whip from 2012–2018 and as Senior Deputy Whip from 2007–2012. Outside of Holyrood, Kidd also serves as Co-President of the international organisation Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND). He has represented PNND at the United Nations, including delivering PNND's address to the 10th NPT Review Conference in August 2022. Scottish Socialist Party
The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP; gd, Pàrtaidh Sòisealach na h-Alba; sco, Scots Socialist Pairtie) is a left-wing political party campaigning for the establishment of an independent socialist Scotland. The party was founded in 1998. It campaigns for Scottish independence, against cuts to public services and welfare and for democratic public ownership of the economy. The SSP was one of three parties in Yes Scotland, the official cross-party campaign for Scottish independence in the 2014 referendum, with national co-spokesperson Colin Fox sitting on its advisory board. The party operates through a local branch structure and publishes Scotland's longest-running socialist newspaper, the ''Scottish Socialist Voice''. The South Shields by-election was a by-election held for the United Kingdom House of Commons constituency of South Shields. It was triggered by the resignation of David Miliband, the previous Member of Parliament (MP) and former Foreign Secretary, who had held the seat for Labour since 2001. The by-election took place on 2 May 2013, coinciding with local elections across England. The by-election was won by Emma Lewell-Buck of the Labour Party with 50.4% of the vote.
