1989 FIVB Men's World Cup
The 1989 FIVB Men's World Cup was held from 17 to 26 November 1989 in Japan. Eight men's national teams played in three cities in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, and Hiroshima) for the right to a fast lane ticket into the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Karch Kiraly
Charles Frederick "Karch" Kiraly () (born November 3, 1960) is an American volleyball player, coach and broadcast announcer. In the 1980s he was a central part of the United States men's national volleyball team, U.S National Team that won gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics, 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, 1988 Olympic Games. He went on to win the gold medal again at the 1996 Summer Olympics, 1996 Olympic Games, the first Beach volleyball at the Summer Olympics, Olympic competition to feature beach volleyball. He is the only player (man or woman) to have won Olympic medals of any color in both the indoor and beach volleyball categories. He played college volleyball for the UCLA Bruins, where his teams won three national championships under head coach Al Scates. Luis Beltran (volleyball)
Luis "Ka Louie" Diaz Beltran (April 4, 1936 – September 6, 1994) was a Philippine broadcast journalist and newspaper columnist. In 2018, Beltran was identified by the Human Rights Victims' Claims Board as a Motu Proprio human rights violations victim of the Martial Law Era. Career Born Luis Diaz-Beltran on April 4, 1936, in Manila, he was known for his outspokenness. During martial law, when he was on the staff of the Evening News, he was one of the many journalists arrested and detained at Camp Crame. Troy Tanner
Troy Richard Tanner (born October 31, 1963 in Hacienda Heights, California) is a former All-American volleyball player. He was a member of the United States men's national volleyball team that won the gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Tanner attended Los Altos High School. He comes from an athletic family. His father, Rolf Tanner, was a sports enthusiast and encouraged his sons to compete at a high level in their respective sports. Troy has four older brothers, Mark, Kirk, Greg & Brett. Troy's nephew, Russell Mark Tanner, broke the long-standing record as the youngest AAA rated beach volleyball player in 1994. Robert Jan "Bob" Ctvrtlik (; born July 8, 1963) is an American volleyball player, Olympic gold medalist, businessman and former member of the International Olympic Committee. He is a 1985 graduate of Pepperdine University. Early life Bob Ctvrtlik was born in Long Beach, California to Margaret and Josef Ctvrtlik. He has two older brothers, Jeffrey and David. Their father, a native of Czechoslovakia's Moravian region, was a graduate of Charles University in Prague and knew eight languages. He was imprisoned for three months during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, German occupation for refusing to serve as a translator. Josef left his country in 1948 by taking a train from Prague to Bratislava and then skiing to Austria with three friends. Giovane Farinazzo Gavio (born September 7, 1970 in Juiz de Fora), known as Giovane, is a retired Brazilian volleyball coach and former player, who was a member of the Brazil men's national volleyball team that won the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain by defeating The Netherlands (3-0) in the final. Andrea Gardini
Andrea Gardini (born 1 October 1965) is an Italian professional volleyball coach and former player, a silver (Atlanta 1996) and bronze (Sydney 2000) Olympic Games medallist, three–time World Champion (1990, 1994, 1998), and four–time European Champion (1989, 1993, 1995, 1999).
