1988–89 WHL Season
The 1988–89 WHL season was the 23rd season for the Western Hockey League. Fourteen teams completed a 72-game season. The Swift Current Broncos won the President's Cup before going on to win the Memorial Cup. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). The league was founded in 1966, as the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League (CMJHL), with seven western Canadian teams in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Seattle Thunderbirds
The Seattle Thunderbirds are a major junior ice hockey team based in the city of Kent, Washington, south of Seattle. They are part of the U.S. Division of the Western Conference in the Western Hockey League. They play their games at home in accesso ShoWare Center. History The team was founded in 1971 as the Vancouver Nats of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) but moved to Kamloops, British Columbia, to become the Kamloops Chiefs in 1973. In 1977 the team moved to Seattle and was renamed the Seattle Breakers. The Breakers played in the Seattle Center Ice Arena, which had a seating capacity of 4,141 for ice hockey. Four Broncos Memorial Trophy
The Four Broncos Memorial Trophy is awarded each year to the Western Hockey League's Player of the Year. The trophy is named in honour of four members of the Swift Current Broncos who were killed on December 30, 1986 in the Swift Current Broncos bus crash: Trent Kresse, Scott Kruger, Chris Mantyka, and Brent Ruff. The accident that occurred as the team bus was en route to a game in Regina. Mike Sillinger
Michael John Sillinger (born June 29, 1971) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for 17 seasons. Sillinger played for twelve different teams and was traded nine times during his NHL career, both of which stand as league records (he is tied with Brent Ashton for the latter record). Originally drafted 11th overall in 1989 out of the Western Hockey League (WHL) by the Detroit Red Wings, Sillinger began his NHL career in Detroit before continuing on to play for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and New York Islanders. Peter Kasowski
Peter Kasowski (born March 19, 1969) is a Canadian former ice hockey and roller hockey player. He was drafted by the Hartford Whalers of the NHL in 1989. Junior career Kasowski played in the WHL for 3 years for Swift Current Broncos and Seattle Thunderbirds. Over these 3 years he scored 324 points in 212 games. His best season being 1988–89 when he scored 131 points in 72 games, he was subsequently drafted by the NHL's Hartford Whalers in the 12th round. Professional ice hockey career Kasowski finished his junior career and was signed by Roanoake Valley Rebels of the ECHL where he spent 2 successful years scoring 54 and 76 points in each of the 36 game seasons. Wayne Hynes
Wayne Hynes (born May 29, 1969) is a Canadians, Canadian-born Germans, German former professional ice hockey player. Hynes competed at the 2001 IIHF World Championship, 2001 and 2002 IIHF World Championships as a member of the Germany men's national ice hockey team . He also played ice hockey at the 2002 Winter Olympics with Team Germany. Coaching career From 2007 to 2010 Hynes was a head coach in the German 2nd Bundesliga (ice hockey), 2nd Bundesliga.
