1988–89 Luton Town F.C. Season
During the 1988–89 English football season, Luton Town F.C. competed in the Football League First Division, in which they finished 16th to secure an eighth successive season at this level. They were holders of the League Cup for this season and maintained their defence of the trophy to the final, where they were beaten by Nottingham Forest. Despite being League Cup holders, Luton did not compete in the UEFA Cup this season due to the continuation of the ban on English clubs in European competitions arising from the Heysel disaster of 1985. Season summary Luton were unable to build on their top-ten finishes of the two previous seasons and finished the season in 16th, just two points clear of relegation. Luton did manage to reach the League Cup final for the second season running, but were unable to defend the cup as they were beaten 3–1 by Nottingham Forest F.C., Nottingham Forest. Luton () is a town and unitary authority with borough status, in Bedfordshire, England. At the 2011 census, the Luton built-up area subdivision had a population of 211,228 and its built-up area, including the adjacent towns of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, had a population of 258,018. Ricky Hill (born 5 March 1959) is an English former footballer, spending most of his playing career at Luton Town FC for 14 years, while representing England at Senior, U21 and U18 International levels. Hill was the fourth Black player to play for England’s Senior National team and the first British South Asian to represent England at the Senior level. Dave Beaumont
David Alan Beaumont (born 10 December 1963 in Dunfermline) is a Scottish retired footballer who played for Dundee United, Luton Town and Hibernian. As a youth, Beaumont won the Under-18 European Championship with Scotland in 1982 and reached the quarter-finals of the subsequent Under-20 World Championship in 1983. Robert Simon Johnson (born 22 February 1962 in Bedford, England) is an English former footballer, most noted as a player for Luton Town. Playing career Johnson signed for local club Luton Town as a 17-year-old in August 1979, but due to two serious knee injuries he didn't make his debut until late on in the 1982–83 season. The start of 1983–84 saw him loaned out to Lincoln City, where he made four appearances before returning to Kenilworth Road. Neither this year nor the next saw him play at all however, and he didn't become a first team player until 1985–86, when he made 15 appearances. Marvin Anthony Johnson (born 29 October 1968) is an English former professional footballer who spent his entire career at Luton Town, playing as a defender. Playing career Johnson signed professional terms with Luton Town on 12 November 1986 as an 18-year-old centre back who could also play as either a full back or midfielder. Richard George Harvey (born 1 April 1969 in Letchworth) is an English former footballer. Playing career A product of the club's youth system, Harvey made his League debut on 1 November 1986 in a 1–0 home win over Queens Park Rangers. Steven Charles Williams (born 12 July 1958) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder for Southampton, Arsenal, Luton Town, Exeter City and Derry City. Stephen Brian Foster (born 24 September 1957) is an English former footballer. Football career Born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, Foster was an associate schoolboy with Southampton, but was not offered a professional contract. He started his professional career at Portsmouth in 1973 as a centre forward. After a season, manager Ian St John converted Foster to a centre back and he marked his debut in that position with an own goal against Bury in November 1976. John Brian Dreyer (born 11 June 1963) is an English former professional footballer and manager who played in defence and midfield. He is currently assistant head coach of Barnet.
