The 1988–89 season was Blackpool F.C.'s 81st season (78th consecutive) in the Football League. They competed in the 24-team Division Three, then the third tier of English league football, finishing nineteenth. 1988–89 In English Football
The 1988–89 season was the 109th season of competitive football in England. The season saw Arsenal win their first league title for 18 years, in dramatic fashion, as they beat defending champions Liverpool 2–0 at Anfield to clinch the title on number of goals scored. Liverpool had won the FA Cup six days earlier and for the second season running missed out on a unique second double. Third placed Nottingham Forest lifted both the Football League Cup and Full Members' Cup. The ban on English clubs, following the Heysel Stadium disaster, was now in its fourth season and UEFA then voted for it to continue for a fifth season. In April 1989, fourteen Liverpool supporters were convicted of manslaughter relating to the disaster. Football League Third Division
The Football League Third Division was the third tier of the English football league system in 1920–21 and again from 1958 until 1992. When the FA Premier League was formed, the division become the fourth tier level. In 2004, following the formation of the Football League Championship, the division was renamed Football League Two. Owen Oyston
Owen John Oyston (born 3 January 1934) is an English former businessman best known as the former majority owner of Blackpool Football Club. Oyston was convicted of rape and indecent assault of a 16-year-old girl in 1996. He served three years and six months of a six-year sentence in prison. He was released after a judicial review of the parole board's refusal to grant parole. On 25 February 2019, Oyston and his daughter, Natalie Christopher, were removed from the board of Blackpool Football Club. Early life Oyston was born in County Durham, but his family moved to Blackpool when he was two. He was educated at St Joseph's College in the town. He opted out of further education at sixteen and started his career as an actor. Samuel Ellis (born 12 September 1946) is an English Association football, football coach (sports), coach and former player. He was most recently the assistant manager of Middlesbrough F.C., Middlesbrough. His only honour was guiding Blackpool F.C., Blackpool to promotion from Division Four to Division Three in 1984–85. Andy Garner
Andrew Garner (born 8 March 1966) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Derby County and Blackpool. He is a first-team coach at Mansfield Town. Playing career Born in Stonebroom, Derbyshire, Garner began his career as an apprentice with Derby County in 1983. He scored some vital goals in the Rams' Division Three promotion season of 1985–86. In August 1988, Garner joined Sam Ellis's Blackpool for £75,000. He made his debut on opening day, 27 August, in a 1–1 draw at Chester City. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Blackpool is a seaside resort in Lancashire, England. Located on the northwest coast of England, it is the main settlement within the borough also called Blackpool. The town is by the Irish Sea, between the Ribble and Wyre rivers, and is north of Liverpool and northwest of Manchester.
