1988 Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1988 Southland Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 8–10, 1988 with quarterfinal matchups being held at the home arena of the higher seed and the semifinals and championship game played at UNT Coliseum in Denton, Texas. North Texas State defeated in the championship game, 87–70, to win their first Southland men's basketball tournament. The Mean Green received a bid to the 1988 NCAA Tournament as No. 15 seed in the West region. They were the only Southland member invited to the NCAA tournament. Conference tournament runner-up Northeast Louisiana was invited to the 1988 NIT Tournament. Format Six of eight of the conference's members participated in the tournament field. UNT Coliseum
The UNT Coliseum is a 9,797-seat multi-purpose arena located in Denton, Texas, United States, built in 1973. While the arena's formal name is the UNT Coliseum, the building is more commonly referred to as the Super Pit, a nickname derived from its proximity to the former home of the Mean Green basketball teams, the Ken Bahnsen Gym, nicknamed the ''Snake Pit''. Denton is a city in and the county seat of Denton County, Texas, United States. With a population of 139,869 as of 2020, it is the 27th-most populous city in Texas, the 197th-most populous city in the United States, and the 12th-most populous city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. 1987–88 North Texas State Mean Green Men's Basketball Team
The 1987–88 North Texas State Mean Green men's basketball team (often referred to as "North Texas" or the "Mean Green") represented the University of North Texas as a member of the Southland Conference during the 1987–88 college basketball season. The team was led by head coach Jimmy Gales and played their home games at the Super Pit in Denton, Texas. After winning the conference regular season title, the Mean Green followed that success by winning the Southland tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Making the school's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament and playing as the No. 15 seed in the West region, the Mean Green were beaten by No. 2 seed North Carolina in the opening round. Tony Worrell
Tony Worrell (December 29, 1965 – November 10, 2015) was an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the North Texas Mean Green. Early life Worrell was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and attended Goldsboro High School. Worrell garnered recruiting attention after playing well in All-Star camps the summer before his senior year and was named to the North Carolina East-West All-Star game. Ultimately, he was scouted by 150 colleges and committed to play for the North Texas Mean Green. College career Worrell scored 1,516 points during his Mean Green career and is ranked 8th in program scoring history. He led the team to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 1988 behind his 20.2 points per game during the season. Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Southland Conference's men's basketball tournament began in 1981, with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. From 1981 to 2001, the first round of the tournament took place at the higher seed, with the remaining rounds at a set location. In 2002, the Southland changed the format to play games at the campus of sites of each higher seed, during every round of the tournament. This was changed again in 2007, the first year that the conference selected a neutral site for all rounds of the tournament. 1988 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1988 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. The 50th annual edition of the tournament began on March 17, 1988, and ended with the championship game on April 4 returning to Kansas City, Missouri for the 10th time. A total of 63 games were played. Kansas, coached by Larry Brown, won the national title with an 83–79 victory in the final game over Big Eight Conference rival Oklahoma, coached by Billy Tubbs.
