1988 IAAF World Cross Country Championships – Senior Women's Race
The Senior women's race at the 1988 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in Auckland, New Zealand at the Ellerslie Racecourse on March 26, 1988. A report on the event was given in the Glasgow Herald. Complete results, medallists, and the results of British athletes were published. World Athletics, formerly known as the International Amateur Athletic Federation (from 1912 to 2001) and International Association of Athletics Federations (from 2001 to 2019, both abbreviated as the IAAF) is the international governing body for the sport of athletics, covering track and field, cross country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running. Marie-Pierre Duros
Marie-Pierre Duros (born 7 June 1967) is a French former middle- and long-distance runner who specialised in the 3000 metres. Her personal best of 8:38.97 minutes for the event is a former French record, which lasted from 1989 to 1999. She was a two-time Olympian (1988 and 1992) and three times participant at the World Championships in Athletics (1987, 1991, 1995). Her greatest achievement was a gold medal 1991 IAAF World Indoor Championships, where she became France's first champion of the competition's history. She also won medals in cross country running with the French women's team, taking bronze at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1988 and silver the following year. Leslie Seymour (athlete)
Leslie George Seymour, JP (1 November 1900 – 15 April 1976) was a British company director and politician from the city of Birmingham. Educated at Solihull Grammar School, Seymour left school at the age of 14 to work in a laboratory at a technical school. He then went into manufacturing industries, and became Managing Director of Improved Metallic Appliances Ltd. He was also involved in Conservative Party politics and was elected to Birmingham City Council from Small Heath ward in 1937. After losing his seat in 1946, he returned to the council from Rotton Park Ward in 1947 for two further terms before again being defeated in 1954. He specialised in the more mundane aspects of local government such as rating and valuation, although he was chair of the Civil Defence Committee in 1944. Susan Tooby
Susan Julia Wightman (née Tooby; born 24 October 1960) is a retired long-distance runner from Great Britain. Representing Wales, she finished sixth in the 10,000 metres at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. She set her personal best of 2:31:33 in the marathon, when finishing 12th at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. At the 1988 Great North Run, she became the first British woman to run a sub-70-minute half-marathon, running 69:46 to finish second behind Greta Waitz. This would stand as the UK record until 1991 when Liz McColgan ran 69:15. Malin Wästlund
Malin Charlotta Wästlund (born 27 April 1964) is a Swedish former long-distance runner. She represented Sweden twice at the IAAF World Women's Road Race Championships, placing fourth in 1987 with a Swedish national record of 49:21 minutes for the 15K run and placing fifth at the 1988 race. She also competed at the 1988 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, finished fifteenth in the women's senior race. Born in Högsbo, near Gothenburg, she competed for IF Spexarna during her career. She won one national title in her career at the 1987 Swedish Half Marathon Championships. She was also runner-up at the Swedish Cross Country Championships that year. In Swedish cross country competitions, she won the 1987 Tjejmilen and was runner-up there and at the Lidingöloppet in 1989. |
