The 1988 Brownlow Medal was the 61st year the award was presented to the player adjudged the fairest and best player during the Victorian Football League (VFL) home and away season. Gerard Healy of the Sydney Swans won the medal by polling twenty votes during the 1988 VFL season. Gerard Healy
Gerard Healy (born 1 March 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer and commentator. Healy attended St Bede's College in Mentone, where he was the senior football captain. Gerard is a trained physiotherapist. VFL career Melbourne Demons Beginning his career with the Melbourne Football Club in 1979, Healy played mostly in a forward pocket role in attack before switching to an on-baller/midfielder role and establishing himself as one of the premier ball winners in the competition. He won Melbourne's best and fairest award in 1984. Sydney Swans He left the Demons in 1985, after playing 130 games, moving to the Sydney Swans at the beginning of the 1986 season. Tony Hall (Australian Footballer)
Anthony Hall (born 16 September 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer in the VFL/AFL and South Australian National Football League (SANFL). SANFL A part of the great Glenelg teams of the mid-1980s with players such as Stephen Kernahan, Tony McGuinness and Chris McDermott, Hall was a key element in their 1986 premiership, playing at Centre Half-Forward. Kicking 6 goals in the 1986 Grand Final, he won the Jack Oatey Medal as best player, to top off a season where he was Glenelg's leading goalkicker (73 goals). VFL/AFL Hall was recruited by Hawthorn, in the more lucrative VFL competition, for the 1988 season. He played in all 24 games that year, including a grand final win for Hawthorn. AFL Tribunal
The AFL Tribunal is the disciplinary tribunal of the Australian Football League (AFL), an Australian rules football competition. The Tribunal regulates the conduct of players, umpires, and other officials associated with the AFL and its clubs. Points system Prior to 2005, any player who was reported would face a hearing at the AFL Tribunal. This process had become problematic, and in 2005, a new system (similar to that used by the NRL Judiciary at the time) was adopted. The changes were primarily made to reduce the number of tribunal hearings, and to improve the consistency of penalties. Tony McGuinness (footballer)
Anthony McGuinness (born 6 May 1964 in Adelaide, South Australia) is a former Australian rules football player who played for Footscray and in the VFL/AFL. His wife is former '' Nine News'' Adelaide presenter Georgina McGuinness. SANFL career McGuinness proved his skills early in his career with leading SANFL club Glenelg, winning the Magarey Medal in 1982 at the age of 18. A dynamic and pacy left-footed rover, he featured strongly in Glenelg's 1985 premiership victory against North Adelaide, kicking 2 goals. Shane Morwood
Shane Morwood (born 1 December 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the VFL/AFL. From Noble Park, Morwood played alongside his brother Paul at South Melbourne, but in 1982 he quit the club, refusing to move to Sydney with the re-location of South Melbourne into the Sydney Swans. He then was recruited by Collingwood in what seemed to be a recruiting frenzy by the Pies, as they were in a development period. Morwood would soon become an experienced backman, yet could play on either flank, but under Leigh Matthews he was played as a defender, and his role as bringing the ball out of trouble saw him become one of the best defenders in the game. Chris Mainwaring
Christopher Douglas Mainwaring (27 December 1965 – 1 October 2007) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL) and for the East Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Adored by young fans for his handsome appearance, Mainwaring was one of the most popular footballers of his era. At his peak, he was one of the finest wingmen in the AFL, forming a devastating midfield combination with Peter Matera in the early 1990s, but after a serious knee injury in 1997 he was never able to recapture his best form. Peter Foster (born 2 June 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented and in the Australian Football League. Darren Kappler (born 23 January 1965) is a former professional Australian rules footballer. Recruited from South Australian National Football League club South Adelaide, Kappler played 187 games for Fitzroy, the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn in the Australian Football League. Darren Millane (9 August 1965 – 7 October 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Jason Hadfield Dunstall (born 14 August 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Dunstall is arguably the greatest Australian rules footballer to come from Queensland. Dunstall was one of the first of a generation of big bodied lead-up full forwards who could also out-wrestle opponents for position in a marking contest and was also an agile team oriented player.
