1987 McDonald's Championship
The 1987 McDonald's Open took place at MECCA Arena in Milwaukee, United States. This was the first edition of the McDonald's Championship and was a round-robin competition between 3 teams: Milwaukee Bucks, Tracer Milano and the USSR. The decider was played between Milwaukee Bucks and the Soviet Union on 25 October 1987 and had the feel of an Olympic Final with highlights of past national team encounters between USA and the USSR in other sports showed on the court's video screen. Background The three teams competed for a $50,000 prize and a trophy emblazoned with the moon-shaped face of former company mascot ''Mac Tonight'' in a brand new competition sanctioned by FIBA that had just omitted the term ''Amateur'' from its acronym. The McDonald's Championship (sometimes called the McDonald's Open) was an international men's professional basketball club cup competition that featured a representative of the National Basketball Association (representing North America) against champion club teams from Europe, the National Basketball League (representing Oceania), and South America. The first competition was held in 1987 and continued annually after that until 1991, when the tournament switched to a biennial event. For the first two years, the men's national teams from Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union participated. In each of the nine years the McDonald's Championship was held, the title was won by a team from the NBA, but twice by a close margin. Ricky Pierce
Richard Charles Pierce (born August 19, 1959) is an American retired National Basketball Association (NBA) player. Nicknamed "Deuces" and "Big Paper Daddy", he was selected as an NBA All-Star (1991) and was twice the NBA Sixth Man of the Year (1987, 1990) while with the Milwaukee Bucks. The 1987 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1987, was the 25th FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA Europe. It was held in Greece between 3 and 14 June 1987. Twelve national teams entered the event under the auspices of FIBA Europe, the sport's regional governing body. The Peace and Friendship Stadium, located in the Neo Faliron in Piraeus, Attica, was the hosting venue of the tournament. The host, Greece men's national basketball team, Greece, won its first FIBA European title by defeating the defending champions and heavily favored Soviet Union men's national basketball team, Soviet Union, with a 103–101 score in a gripping final decided in overtime (sports)#Basketball, overtime. Pallacanestro Olimpia Milano, commonly known as Olimpia Milano or as EA7 Emporio Armani Milan after its title sponsor, is an LBA Italian professional basketball team, based in Milan, Italy. Darell Garretson
Darell Lee Garretson (March 18, 1932 – April 21, 2008) was an American professional basketball referee in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 27 years from 1967 to 1994 wearing uniform number 10, and he later served as NBA Supervisor of Officials for 17 years from 1981 to 1998. During his career, Garretson officiated over 2,000 games, including 1,798 regular-season NBA games, 269 playoff games, 39 Finals games and five All-Star games. On April 4, 2016, Garretson was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as an official. Costas Rigas ( el, Κώστας Ρήγας),(born March 29, 1944 in Greece), is a retired Greek pro basketball player, and a former pro basketball referee. Rigas is a member of the EuroLeague's 50 greatest contributors. In 2013, he was enshrined into the FIBA Hall of Fame. Playing career Rigas played club basketball with Amyntas, in Greece. Dino Meneghin
Dino Meneghin (, ; born 18 January 1950) is an Italian former professional basketball player. He is widely considered to be the best Italian player ever, as well as one of Europe's all-time greats. A 2.06 m (6 ft 9 in) tall center, Meneghin was born in Alano di Piave, Veneto (northeast Italy). On 20 November 1966, when he was 16 years old, he played in his first game in the Italian League, with Ignis Varese. He played the last game of his career at the age of 45. In 2003, Meneghin became a Basketball Hall of Fame player and in 2010, he became a FIBA Hall of Fame player. The 1986–87 FIBA European Champions Cup was the 30th edition of the FIBA European Champions Cup club competition (now called EuroLeague). The Final was held at the Centre Intercommunal de Glace de Malley in Lausanne, Switzerland, on April 2, 1987. It was won by Tracer Milano, who defeated Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv, by a result of 71–69.
