1987 Cardiff City Council Election
The 1987 Cardiff City Council election was held on Thursday 7 May 1987 to the district council known as Cardiff City Council, in Cardiff, South Glamorgan, Wales. It took place on the same day as other district council elections in Wales and England. The Conservative Party lost control of the council, though the Labour Party were unable to regain an overall majority. The previous Cardiff City Council election took place in 1983 and the next full elections took place in 1991. Overview Prior to the elections the Conservatives had a majority of three on the council. National opinion polls showed Labour was gaining in popularity, particularly on local issues. In Cardiff the Conservatives were also facing a challenge from the SDP-Liberal Alliance. Cardiff City Council
Cardiff City Council was the local government district authority that administered the city of Cardiff, capital of Wales, from 1974 until 1996. The district council replaced the pre-1974 county borough council. It was succeeded in 1996 by Cardiff Council. The old administrative county of Glamorgan was subdivided, with Cardiff and the ''Vale'' between Cardiff and Bridgend forming South Glamorgan. Adamsdown
Adamsdown ( cy, Waunadda or ) is an inner city area and community in the south of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Adamsdown is generally located between Newport Road, to the north and the mainline railway to the south. The area includes Cardiff Prison, Cardiff Magistrates' Court, Cardiff Royal Infirmary, a University of South Wales campus, and many streets of residential housing. History In mediaeval times, Adamsdown lay just outside the east walls of Cardiff and was owned by the lords of Glamorgan. The area may be named after an Adam Kygnot, a porter at Cardiff Castle around 1330 AD. The Welsh name ''Waunadda'' derives from ''(g)waun'' (a heath or down) and the personal name ''Adda'' (Adam). Heath ( Welsh: ''Y Mynydd Bychan'') is the name of an electoral ward in the north of the city of Cardiff, Wales, which covers its namesake community, Heath. The ward elects three county councillors to the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff. Description and history The Heath ward boundaries are coterminous with the community. It is bordered to the north by Ty-wern Road ( Rhiwbina ward) and the Cardiff City Line ( Llanishen ward), to the east by the Cardiff to Caerphilly railway line (Cyncoed ward), to the south by the Western by-pass (Gabalfa ward) and to the west by the A470 road ( Whitchurch & Tongwynlais ward). Fairwater (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
Fairwater is the name of an electoral ward in the west of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers Fairwater and Pentrebane on the outskirts of the urban area. The Fairwater ward is bordered to the west by Pentyrch and St Fagans, to the east by Llandaff and to the south by the Ely ward. Ely (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
Ely is the name of an electoral ward in the west of the city of Cardiff, Wales, which covers its namesake community, Ely. The ward elects three county councillors to the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff. It has previously been represented by the Labour Party, until February 2019 when Plaid Cymru won one of the council seats. Description The ward boundaries are coterminous with the community of Ely, north of Cowbridge Road West. Jennifer Elizabeth Randerson, Baroness Randerson (born 26 May 1948) is a Welsh Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. She is former junior minister in the Wales Office serving in the Cameron–Clegg coalition. Cyncoed
Cyncoed ( ); is an affluent and exclusive community (Wales), community in the northeast of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. With many properties in the area fetching over £1 million, Cyncoed is considered to have some of the highest property prices in the country. Cyncoed overlooks the city centre of Cardiff, near Roath Park, with views of the surrounding mountains. Michael James German, Baron German, OBE (born 8 May 1945) is a British politician, serving currently as a member of the House of Lords and formerly as a member of the National Assembly for Wales for the South Wales East region. The Cathays ( ) electoral ward of Cardiff, created in 1890, which since 1974 has covered the Cathays and Castle communities. There is no community council for the area and it has elected three Cardiff councillors from the outset. Description The Cathays ward includes some or all of the following areas: Blackweir, Cardiff city centre, Cathays Park and Maindy in the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff Central. It is bounded by Gabalfa and Birchgrove to the north; Plasnewydd and Adamsdown to the east; Butetown to the south; and Riverside to the west. Jacqui Gasson
Jacqueline-Anne Gasson ( – 14 June 2020) was a British politician. She was an elected councillor and member of South Glamorgan County Council and Cardiff Council, Wales between 1988 and 2012. From 2004 to 2005, she was Lord Mayor of Cardiff, the first ever member of the Liberal Democrats to hold this post.
