The 1986–87 Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball team represented the University of Illinois. Regular season The 1986–87 season saw the addition of an outstanding group of young players to the roster. Guards Steve Bardo, Kendall Gill and Larry Smith joined forward Nick Anderson in a highly touted recruiting class. This group produced another 20-win season (23-8) and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, where Illinois was beaten 68-67 by Austin Peay in arguably the school's most shocking upset. This marked the first season in Big Ten Conference basketball history where two teams finished with 30 or more victories. This season also marks the NCAA's first unified 3-point line of 19 feet 9 inches after 5 years of experimentation. 1986–87 Florida Gators Men's Basketball Team
The 1986–87 Florida Gators men's basketball team represented the University of Florida as a member of the Southeastern Conference during the 1986–87 NCAA men's basketball season. Led by head coach Norm Sloan, the team played their home games at the O'Connell Center in Gainesville, Florida. After finishing second in the SEC regular season standings, Florida was bounced in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament by LSU. The Gators received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, the school's (technically) first appearance in the tournament, where they made a run to the Sweet Sixteen. In the opening round, Florida defeated NC State and followed that by knocking off No. 3 seed Purdue. The 1986–87 DePaul Blue Demons men's basketball team represented DePaul University during the 1986–87 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They were led by head coach Joey Meyer, in his 3rd season at the school, and played their home games at the Rosemont Horizon in Rosemont. After opening the season unranked in both major polls, the Blue Demons won their first 16 games and rose as high as No. 4 in the AP poll. DePaul received a bid to the 1987 NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed in the Midwest region. DePaul beat Louisiana Tech in the opening round and St. John's in the round of 32 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. The 1986–87 Northeastern Huskies men's basketball team represented Northeastern University during the 1985–86 college basketball season. Led by first-year head coach Karl Fogel, the Huskies competed in the ECAC North Conference and played their home games at Matthews Arena. They finished the season 27–7 overall with a 17–1 mark in ECAC North play to win the regular season conference title. The Huskies one conference loss split two separate 11-game win streaks. They followed the regular season by winning the ECAC North Conference tournament to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament as No. 14 seed in the East region. The 1986–87 Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team represented Georgetown University in the 1986–87 NCAA Division I college basketball season. John Thompson, coached them in his 15th season as head coach. They played their home games at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland. They were members of the Big East Conference and finished the season with a record of 29–5, 12–4 in Big East play.
